Rat 1 vs. Resilience: Value Moderate/Hard-Use Folder

So, I got a bum rat 1 and have to decide either to exchange it for another one or get a refund for something else. I'm looking for a knife that I don't have to worry about it breaking for two reasons: because it is a tough and well made knife, and because it is a real value purchase.

I have read a lot about both the resilience and rat 1 and people seem to be all about the rat, but I'm apprehensive because mine developed bad blade and clip play on a week of light use.

I will want to be able to use this knife for camping/outdoor use and harder every day stuff. what knife, preferably but not necessarily out of those two, would you recommend and why?

ALLHSS

Go for the rat one again just be sure to get a non coated blade their just a better knife than the Chinese spydercos
And for the money the resilience costs you can get a Kershaw blur from kershawguy

I prefer the RAT-1 of those two overall, but especially when you consider the price difference (with the price difference you could throw in a Mora that's better than either of them for your camping/outdoor use).

Apologies for the possibly stupid question, but did you try tightening the screws? My RAT-1 has been beat on quite a bit and doesn't have blade play issues.

Yeah, I did. It centered up a bit and was tighter, but it loosened up right away. I know I could loctite it, but since the option is available I'd rather just get a new one with good screws.

Oh, and I have a Mora. I know this is blasphemy, but I'm not a big fan. I know it's a 15 dollar knife, but I'd rather spend a bit more money and get something better.

But I get what your saying and appreciate the advice.

I would spring for another RAT-1. You got a lemon, I bought a buddy of mine one that was solid out of the box. He has used his pretty hard and has had no problems. I have a Tenacious, and I am going to assume that it will have similar quirks. My Tenacious was fairly gritty out of the box and it had to be cleaned to get it smooth. Both the knives are excellent budget folders, but I think the RAT-1 is slightly better in terms of quality.

Oh, no problems. I'm not fanatical about persecuting blasphemers who go against the forum dogma--ALL MUST BOW DOWN TO SPYDERCO, CRK AND THE HINDERER, ALSO, BUY A MORA NOW--er, wait, what were we talking about? ;)

For outdoors purposes I'd take a Mora (I use a goofy orange Companion F most out of mine) over either of these knives, but I'm really never in the woods without my trusty Benchmade 710 either, so I guess I'm not anti-folder after all.

I have both the RAT-1 and Resilience, and while I prefer the RAT-1 and think it's a better deal, they're both nice knives for the money. I will admit, however, to usually putting a drop of permatex purple (blue on pivots that won't stay where I want them, sometimes) on all the screws of a knife when I reassemble it, so it's possible I just dodged a loose screw bullet without knowing it on the RAT-1.

got my rat 1 about moth ago and i havent hat a problem with it yet... If you dont want to get another definitely go with the resilience it is a high value knife for the cost and i havent heard of too many manufacture issues with it compared to the Rat 1

both are excellent, like the resilience alittle more because of the pocket clip and the full flat grind to it which is excellent for splitting wood

I'd get another rat, especially with all the great collectable colors that are available. The tenacious seems like a more usable knife than it's big bother. I've had all three. I traded the Resilience. I prefered to spend the extra money on a Manix xl and have more managable size plus quality.

I'm pretty into spyderco, but I don't get the crk and hinderer thing. I get wanting a truly beautiful and well made knife, but how do so many people have enough money to buy them. I'm having trouble with a good benchmade.

So you like the 710? I'm looking at it and the contego.

I'd get the Spyderco because its a better knife...

Just to be clear, this is your opinion and is in no way indicative of the reality.

I would take the RAT 1. I think it is more sturdy, smooth, and locks up tighter. I also prefer AUS 8 over 8cr13mov. And the RAT 1 pocket clip. And the RAT 1 handle shape. AND the RAT 1 is less expensive to boot.

Oh and the Randall's Adventure training logo is pretty cool along with the triangle on the pocket clip. Great knife.

That sounds allot like an opinion...

How bout G10 is better then non-grip nylon or what ever is it... or that goofy slight re-curve that serves no purpose? Or lacking traction plan? Or the fact it's difficult to deploy left handed? Look, its a great 30$ knife and maybe the best 30$ knife but the spyderco is a better knife...

I don't have a resilience but i do have a tenacious and have use with a rat 1. I'd say they're both wonderful knives. I'd have to go with the rat-1 just because of looks. I don't like the resilience much aesthetically. I'll assume they are both equal quality because the tenacious is a well built knife I don't see the bigger model being any lesser and I know the rat-1 is pretty tough and I guess you just got a lemon. So go with the rat 1 again and if you have the same problem try the spyderco.

Yes, it is my opinion.

You're making declarations "it's a better knife" "the spyderco is a better knife". You're entitled to say whatever you want but it makes it much more credible if you support it with reasons.

Have fun with your Resilience. I'd pay more money for the RAT 1. Luckily I don't have to.

I listed reasons above... And I have both blades and look at them objectively.

Aside from liking one more, one is better...

Yeah, I was only joking. I sold the only CRK I bought, and I don't see ever paying the prices a Hinderer fetch for a regular production knife.

I love the 710. I also love the 940, 950, and 707, but then again I'm a bit of a cheap and easy knife whore that way. I seem to have a lot of love to go around, when it comes to knives. The 710 is one of my all time favorites, though. I'd take it over the forum-favorite PM2 every day of the week and seventeen times on Sunday, but that's just me.

I have the benchmade contego it is awesome if youre thinking about getting it I would save up and just get the 810 if you want a beater go with the rat 1 or a utilitac 2 I have 3 resiliences they are nice but two of them have bladeplay unless I tighten the pivot then I cant flick it open easily and the other one has no bladeplay but the blade is not centered I think its because of the paper thin and I mean paper thin bushings. btw i've had loose piviots on alot of knives from cheap to expensive knives every time I get a new knife I take the pivot screw out and locktite it.

I own several Rat 1 folders. None of them have a recurved blade. Has the design been changed recently, or did you mean something about the handle shape when you wrote "recurve"?
