Rat-3 prototype made by Mike Perrin. Collectible?, or User?

What kind of nut tattoos knives and logos on themselves......oh wait nevermind....(a knife nut).....dude you need to post that pic in the knife tat thread with the rat tats..

There's no such thing as a collectible knife.

Oh, there are, my friend, but you gotta get into the likes of Larry Feugen before you're there.

If I had a Moran ST-23 I'd be using it to kill pigs.

That RAT demands to be used and carried.

That was actually a fake prop knife used by a federal agency I cannot name here to entrap knife collectors that also trafficed in pornography and cocaine out of Colombia many years ago. It didn't work very well because the collectors recognized the knife as a fake and instead got the federal agents to take part in some filmed pornography parts (while high on coke) involving animals and used that to get the feds to back off. Can't trust those knife collectors.:)

Mike, can you build me a couple more then? I've got some local housecleaning to attend to. Maybe something with a "chicago/ cook county/ state of IL flavor" to it?

Just for the record, I didn't 'build' this proto type. This was done years ago under our design by another shop. I don't remember the circumctances for signing this knife but Jeff and I both signed a bunch of knives years ago. I don't doubt that is my signature. There is one more thing here to think about before using this knife. This knife being marked 'proto type' may not actually be heat treated and thus not suitable for use in the field. A lot of knives we have proto typed are only physical renderings and not fully heat treated for use. Only way you would know would be to have it Rockwell tested. If it falls out around 57 it is ok. Mike

Hello everyone.

I received this knife in a trade.

It is in nearly perfect shape. Slight patina on the blade.

Email from Mike Perrin says:
"It sounds like a production proto type someone got at a show or something
years ago when Jeff and I were still with Ontario. I think I may have had
a tool at one or two of the shows writing our names on knives. Likely
around 2002-3 or so I would think."

So I ask you all, is this something that someone would want to keep in a collection, or should I use it?

I don't have shelf queens, my stuff gets used.

I like the size, and the bare blade. I may EDC it if it's not too "special"

Also, anyone know what steel it may be? or any other details?

Thanks in advance.

Hey guys,
Thanks for all of the input.

Especially you Mike!

I may have access to a rockwell tester. I'll try to test this thing soon.

It's going to be a use it, or sell/trade it choice.

:)

good thing you don't have email checked on your profile - you just opened yourself up to a bunch of knifehounds with that "sell/trade" option! :D
