Rat-3 vs F1

Wow, I guess I'm going to be 'that guy' in this discussion. I have both and even though I despise a choil on smaller knives I still am just not liking stainless steel at all. I have had chipping problems with my F1 (because of the thinned edge I'm sure, although it isn't that thinned), and it has taken a definate role for me in wet environments, like canyoneering, boating. But I still prefer the Rat-3 for all around use and I believe that edge retention is better all around. May be my dry Arizona Tastes though.

Edge chipping on the F1? It does seem to be harder than other VG-10, but not really brittle. Of course, the edge is going to lose a lot of strength if you use a V-sharpener et al on it; the convex edge is half of the magic, IMO.

Yes, I believe your absolutely correct. Initially I was having a lot of problems after converting to a V-Grind, although now I've gone back to a slightly more abtuse convex and a lot of the problems have vanished. But I still have had some problems even with the convex grind.

Did you have the problems also initially, before you had messed with the grind of the knife? Because I've owned a number of F1s, and never any chipping whatsoever. And what did you do with it when it chipped? If it chipped in out of the box condition on some reasonable work (that is, not batoning concrete), then you might have a warranty case there. :)

I don't mean to hijack any threads...and I hope it's okay to ask this. Where is the best place to buy an F1? If asking this type of question is frowned-upon on the forum, please forgive a rookie.

I've seen Ragnar and Felinevet mentioned before, so I hope it's okay to ask you folks where is a dependable source for the F1.

Thanks!

i like the RAT line up,simple straight forward knife, simple design and can take abuse ,no chipping issues or anything, i have both 1095 & D2 but prefer 1095,simple steel, sharpen easily and just a good blade.

best price Ive found. Convinced a Canadian dealer to match their price, so I'm ordering from S and R knives.

I have tried a Rat 3. I own an F1.

I think for me the biggest advantage to the F1 is it has a way keener edge. The F1 requires no modification to cut well.

The Rat 3 just has this V grind zipped across the edge and the one I tried at least just didn't penetrate into wood near as far as the F1 with the same amount of force.

I'd go with the F1, although I wouldn't be unhappy with a Rat 3. Either one will be far better than a Mora, IMO.

I would go with the F1 for an overall knife. The handle feels great and the knife itself isn't that big to lug around.

I was certain that if i bought a Fallkniven i'd buy a F1, until i saw the Tre Kronor. Now it would be a tossup between the two.
Unfortunately there are none of either type within a reasonable distance for me to "paw".
Has anybody here tried the Tre Kronor yet?

TGBU isn't the most visited area of the site, so I figured I'd just throw it out there.
There's a reason we have specialized forums. it keeps from overloading the supposedly popular forums, and allows people to go to the ones with their preferred topics.

GBU is heavily trafficked -- you just don't see people posting when they're looking for information or if they don't have anything to add.

I have not tried the Tre Kronor out, but I was wondering if anyone had more info on the 3G steel used in this model.
