Thanks Derrick for the contest, name is Darrell H. Wyatt
First some pron
.
Family pic, (This is the day before I gave the 2 unwrapped ones away, one went to a sister another two a B-I-L)
Where the izula normally rides if I am not carrying in my pocket or on my belt.
Now two glamor shots and I am done with pics, (Sorry no pics of her in use, I had to borrow a digital camera to get these)
Packaging- (Izula without kit) The Izulas come in a clear plastic bag with Izula, sheath, RAT survival tips card, and a sheet of paper showing possible EDC options and how to assemble some parts if you got the kit. It also lists warranty and how to wrap you Izula.
My Initial Impressions- Light weight, handle was a little small, nice factory edge, a little hard to get out of the sheath, and dang what a beautiful coating.
Later Impressions- Parachute cord handle wrap is almost a must, it makes the handle and grip 100% better and adds nice looks. It isn't hard to sharpen and it keeps an edge for a good while. It gets easier to pull the Izula from the sheath with time. It can take one heck of a beating and keep asking for more.
Coating- Looks good, adds a little texture, on one side you have IZULA and the RAT logo and on the other side you have an ant and ROWEN. Also it is tough as heck, I was pleasantly surprised to see after some hard use (Whacking the spine to near the tip of the blade of the Izula with a piece of wood while batoning through some hard wood) that the Izula showed no marks or scratches on the coating.
Edge- on the 3 I received one's grind was higher than the others and gave it an almost scary sharp edge. The other two had a pretty nice edge. I have put the edge through some hard use and it has showed no signs of rolling, chipping, or rusting.
Jimping- The jimping is nice, it is not too aggressive, but it actual does do it job. Also I press my thumb against the sheath to remove my Izula and when it slides out my thumb lands on the jimping squarely, so good placement .
It is not a chopper, wasn't designed to be one and doesn't have the weight or blade shape to be one. It is ok at batoning as long as the blade is longer than the piece of wood you are trying to split.
Pros: Small size and light weight makes for a great EDC knife. It is affordable at around $50 without the kit. It is more durable and tougher than I thought it would be. It comes with the RAT warranty. Its blade shape make it very versatile and good for multiple chores. Rowen is great at heat treating 1095 steel. The sheath holds the Izula in nice and tight, and it is a very slim designed sheath. Also an OD green coating with ACU digi camo is about as good looking as some of the RAT models
.
Cons: A longer handle would have been nice, at first it can be a little hard to remove the Izula from its sheath, and Izulas are like potato chips, it is hard to stop after one and if you let someone use it you spread the addiction.
Thanks for the contest Derrick,
