RAT 7 - D2 or 1095

1095 for cutting/chopping and D2 for doing a lot of cutting the abrasive stuff. 1095 is a good choice for 7" blade. Also a breeze to sharpen.

The only reason I was looking at a RAT was to get one with D2, but I agree, it sounds like the RAT-7 is to big to get in D2. I have several TOPS knives in 1095 and will probably just stick with those. Thanks for the advise!

You have to keep in mind the blade geometry also. Chipping occurs at the edge, and the 3/16" spine doesn't affect how thick/sturdy the edge is. The RAT7 is a full flat grind on a relatively wide blade, and gets reasonably thin behind the edge.

True. Most of what I see in D2 blades the makers and manufacturers are taking the grinds pretty thin maximizing the steel's abilities for cutting. If the Rat knife being spoken of here has a thicker primary grind and edge profile even if its 1/8" it can probably take a good bit before the impacting would be an issue, but then it wouldn't do the kind of work it is really better at with that edge I don't think. Kershaw makes the Outcast I think its called and I believe it used to be in D2. Not sure if that is the case now or if its still even made but there were some guys pretty happy with it in D2 as I recall so I'm not saying it won't work. Just that I think 1095 is a better choice for a big fixed blade knife around the camp. Its what I'd prefer anyway.
