I need to have the Ontario knife experience. Everyone here has said nothing but great things about them. Either the RAT-7 or the RTAK-2 would be paired with my RD-4/ Mora. Which should I get. I like 1095 for it's ease to sharpen in the wilderness. Thanks for help in advance.

It depends on what you're looking for. If you want a really really big knife/chopper, then get the RTAK II, but if you want something that's more manageable and knifelike, then get the RAT7 (although it still makes a great chopper). Personally, if I were you, I'd start out with the RAT-7. You won't be disappointed.

Thanks, Baron. My thought was that I could reprofile part of the RTAK blade to about 30 degrees inclusive. Nice and close to handle this would be great for fine work. Although the RAT-7, due to it's lighter weight, would be much more likely to see use in camping/hiking.

I have a rtak2. It's a hell of a knife for sure. But, I think I'd of been better off with the rat-7 myself. I have found the rtak2 pretty managable for it's size though. I also wish the handle was slightly smaller. I found that a layer or two of some cloth-like tape offers a better overall grip on it too.

I'm a mid range knife guy myself, So something with a 7" blade would be what I prefer. RAt 7, Recon scout, BK7 even a RD7 would be the way to go in my eyes.

I have both, and the 7 is plenty.

The RTAKII is a really huge knife, pictures on the web don't give a good indication of its true size and heft IMO. Every time I'm ready to pack mine for a trip, I pick it up, look at it, marvel at what a nice knife it is - especially for the money - then pack my Becker BK9 instead.

The BK9 is obviously a big knife, but the RTAKII is much bigger in a way that the specs alone don't show.

The 7, on the other hand, is a really perfectly sized knife for most field and camping tasks.
I recommend it in 1095 BTW.

Thanks for all your help. I think the seven is the way to go since I will use it more due to its size. Thanks!

If you got that RD4, it's all you need actually, right? But hell, that RAT-7 is fantastic too, and a lot of fun to use. Probably just as the RTAK II. I hope to get the RTAK II soon. Can't wait to get it in my hands and use the snot out of it.....:D

Anyway, you can't go wrong with Ontario or Ranger Knives.

If you are partnering with a mora, get the RTAK. The mora can more than handle the delicate tasks, and the RTAK gets the big jobs done.
