Rat Cutlery RC-3

My Rat-3 is by far my favorite small utility knife because of it's slicing and cutting ability. Not much use for prying with a tool that size. I like the fact that the handle has been slightly extended on the RC-3. I'm sure anyone would be happy with either model. Great knives.

Derrick,

Our standard on this is 50 pcs. to do a private label for companies. For LEO and military groups we will do smaller runs. For example, the RAT-3 pictured above was done for the USMS SOG Group for a special detail they had a while back. The back side has their deployment dates etched in the blade. The private labeled RC-3 is for our upcoming November 2007 jungle survival school participants. It's just a sample right now. The finished knife will have the name of the class that the participants will choose after the class is over with, such as "Cascabel" or "Shushupe" which have been some of the past names. Neither of these private labels are available for sale to the public. We're also doing the limited edition 25th Anniversary SWAT Magazine knife, but any limited edition model is serialized and once they're gone we don't extend the run. No duplicate serial numbers either.

So how are the RAT-3 and the RC-3 different from each other as far as heat treat goes, and how will that affect the difference in strength, cutting ability, etc. between the two knives?

Hi Troop.
The long answer is we make knives to cut and slice. The RC-3 and RAT-3 are lightweight, compact general utility knives. Neither the RC-3 or RAT-3 are made to be heavy duty knives to pry open doors, but they will do fine for 90% of all the chores that a compact carry knife is made for.

What type of uses does your duty knife see on a daily basis? You may be better off with the Ontario TAK or a similar style knife from SwampRat, SOG or TOPS.

We've had the RAT-3 fielded with Marines and Soldiers for a long time now in the combat zones of Iraq and Afganistan and they're holding up well for their uses. But again, I wouldn't pry open doors or break locks with a knife this thin.

Jeff

Jeff,

I agree with your logic. I recently bought a Scrap Yard knives Street Scrapper 4, because I wanted something smaller than my RAT7, that I could use in the field. I'm not very impressed with it, which is not cool for a $250 knife. The blade is VERY thick at the spine, though not very wide. The point is too rounded to pierce well, and the knife is not big enough for chopping or heavy work. I still carry my RAT7 D2 in the field, because it works so well for what I need. I really wanted INFI steel, so I'm glad to have that, but the knife just sits in my drawer now.

For a small fixed blade, I want a thinner blade made for slicing. Guess I'll have to look at getting a TAK now.....

Its differentially heat treated 1095. It will flex a lot before it breaks. It will be no suprise when it does.
for the record I have used my rat-3 to pry hinges off of solid wood doors.

I was wondering why isnt other sheath colours offered with the knife, im not a fan of the tan one and much prefer black or od.
Will there be future options without the green liner - not my cup of tea either.

Also dont like the pointed pommel - not a function point but more the look.

The longer handle does make it look better to me however.

The knife on the whole really appeals to me though I love the new look to the micarta (judging by photos)

Edit- Forgot to say this is for my uncle who is shipping out with his unit in a month or so. So some of these opinions may change and may not be a problem but would like to hear some views. But we do nearly have identical taste in knives.
My uncle is also hopeless at sharpening and maintaining knives so how durable is 1095 and how easy is it to sharpen and hold an edge.
Just need to scrape up the money, but i do owe him - he persuades my parents to let the "careless teen" get knives. LOL

oh thankyou - I knew they offered seperate sheaths but why not with the knife so customers save money? Instead of buying one to suit their tastes.

The reason we only offer one sheath on a completed RC-3 system is simply a stock issue. We're too small at the present time to predict what colors sell more than others so we have to assemble one color for stock. Otherwise we would have to wait until orders come in to do final assembly, thus delaying shipments. In the future we will probably offer color choices. With that said, we do offer singular sales of molded sheath in various colors and we will also make this offer: we will trade sheaths with someone. So, if you purchase an RC-3 with the standard coyote brown sheath but would rather have a different color, then send us the new coyote brown sheath back and we'll send you whatever color you want in exchange.

As for the handle liners, we use the green to mark the standard RAT Cutlery knives. On special runs, such as the Limited Edition SWAT magazine knife, we use a different color liner. We also offer different color liners on private label knives.

thanks Jeff!
I know its hard for a new company to predict outcomes. Ill probably wait it out.

Thanks
