Rat Cutlery RC-5

Following this thread I have finally learned that there appears to be a difference between the RAT brand knives and the Ontario RAT line (who market with an extremely similar logo and use Randall Adventure & Training in their literature and descriptions.
I now have 3 Ontario Rat knives (4 in TAK-1, 5 in Rat-5, and the Rat-6)
These are great knives and look almost exactly like those in the official RAT website.
Ontario does not offer some models exactly like RAT. For instance my Ontario RAT-5 has a full flat grind and 3/16th stock rather than saber ground 1/4". I can tell little or no difference between the RAT-6's at all. The handle micarta and blade coating is nearly the same also.

Can anyone explain the difference between these companies, any legal affiliation, and comment about any difference in quality.

I will say that I use my Ontario RAT's pretty hard in hunting, butchering, and camping, and they take an edge quick and hold it long, so I can't complain so far.

Thanks for the insight

Ontario was producing knives under licence from RAT. The knives they produce and sell are designed by the guys at RAT.

For more info on that topic see the RAT cutlery subforum under manufacturers.

I think it's near impossible to determine which RAT Cutlery knives are better, but with a warranty like that, there's no excuse to not own all of them... I'm feeling an RC-5 right now. :D

Personally, I like its looks a bit better than the RC-6, but, functionally, I think the RC-5 would be only a hair tougher than the RC-6... another one of those personal preference issues??

I imagine that it is a GOOD bit tougher than the RC6.

1/4 inch saber grind man. Tough stuff.

Anyone else considering to convert the grind to convex?

Damn, the more I look at the pictures the more I fall in love with this one!

I know. They are awesome. I will be getting an RC-4 in desert tan. I love my RC-5 and have already filled the sheath with survival items.

Thanks for the tip!
Knivesshipfree.com has got them both indeed.

I have read that the RC-5 has got a sabre grind?
What are the advantages of that specific kind of grind?
Also I was wondering if you can still use the Spyderco Sharpmaker to sharpen this knife.
I would very much apreciate it if someone could give me a link or some info about grinds, what their purposes are etc.

Greetings from Holland!

The RC-5 is a beast of a knife, and the saber grind is used for just that reason. The grind offers strength and durability for heavy duty use.

As for the sharpmaker, you can use that thing to shapen what ever you want, depending on your skill level.

Hey those of you who already got your hands on the RC-5 knife, what are the measurements on the accessory pocket on the sheath?
I'd just like ot know what knida sharpening equipment I could fit in there.

yes dude i own a rc-5 and its amazing great for chopping, making shelter, if you only had one knife to bring into the wilderness this would be it!!!!

They have taken a different tack with the RC-5. It doesn't have the flat grid, it is 1/4" thick instead of 3/16", it has the punch pommel...and it costs quite a bit more than the others. It was designed as an aircrew survival knife where the others more along bushcraft lines. Some will find that 1/4" too thick and perhaps not as easy to sharpen but it is designed to be seriously stong...to pry your way out of a downed aircraft and then survive with it.
