Rat cutlery

The RC-5 is a beast of knife, it is pretty thick but that thickness also means it will be heavy. Some other RAT knives you may like, if the weight is a turn off, is the RC-4 or RC-6. All RAT knives come with the RAT warranty so that is another plus.

I have one. It is a hell for stout knife. Waaaay overbuilt. I convesed the edge on mine and it cuts OK but being a sabre grind not near as well as any other 5 inch bladed knife I own. The original run Eagle sheaths which I have with mine enable it to be turned into a fairly comprehensive kit.

Downside is weight. It is very heavy for a knife with it's capabilities. While the RC4 doesn't have the nifty sheath that mine came with it will serve most folks FAR better for most wilderness needs. The exception being those who NEED a prybar not just to pry apart kindling etc.

The quality of the knife and sheath I recieved is fantastic, as it has been on every RAT Cutlery rpoduct I've purchased. However if you are looking for a knife that will perform well at bushcraft and in the kitchen etc. You would be better served with the RC4 or RC6.
Mine mainly gathers dust these days.

Id take an Rc-4 or 6. Quater inch on a five inch knife is overdone. There no way anybody chops with a 5 inch blade. A thinner blade means more precise cuts, and since the RC-5 isn't a chopper anyway, that extra thickness is uneeded. Besides, the thinner RAT blades are super, super, super tough as well.

And you cant go wrong with any RAT product.

Depends on what you plan on doing with it. It is a beast at .25 thick/sabre as was already mentioned but it can do light chores also if you don't mind the weight. I keep mine in my vehicle.
The "Survival-Escape-Evasion" description is no joke. If you want a heavy duty blade to beat on, you can't go wrong for the price and warranty. Kydex is soon to be offered opposed to the cumbersome nylon sheath currently spec'd with it.

Edit: Not sure how it will ride on a 10x4 water bottle pouch. It's a heavy blade. The RC4 would be much better and more of an all around blade.

Like the others have said, all the RC knives are very well built. The RC-5 and 6 are a little big for the 10x4. The RC-3 or 4 is what you are looking for.

I'd say you'd probably be more happy with an RC-4, come stop by the RAT forum and look/ask around.

Been looking at the RC-5 myself.
What is the weight on the RC-5?
Anybody have an RC-5 and a Becker Companion BK-2?
A side by side pic would be cool!

I would hate to lug around an RC-5 on anything short of a full-sized backpack. The thing weighs about a full pound! I'd personally go with the RC-6 or RC-4. If you want something on the shorter side, go with the 4, but even the 6 will be both lighter and more versatile for civilian usage as compared to the 5. The 5 excels at what it was made for: Air Force SERE work. The RC-6, however, was intended as a "one-knife-only" solution for just about anything you throw at it. ;)

Thanks....I'll look into the RC-6. For some reason the RC-5 just keeps catching my eye :D Anybody got any pics of this knife in use ?

The current issue of Tactical Knives has a few pics. I'm going to echo the sentiment of the others, however, and recommend the RC-4. I have one and it is a great all-rounder. The RC-5 has the sharpened pry bar look to me, but maybe that's what you are after...:)

The RC-5 is the best of the breed, as far as I’m concerned.

Put a nice convex edge on it and you have one hell of a field tool.

No doubt about it, the RC5 is a GREAT knife, but as the others have said here, it's just way too heavy for the MAX water holder.

I keep a RC4 on my Maxpedition Water Holder, and it's about the right size. I'm actually thinking about switching it out with a RAT HEST knife, which will probably be a perfect backup knife for my Maxpedition kit.

Anyway....here's a pic of the kit with the RC4

It would be really badass if RC made a blade that had the RC5 handle, but a choil-less 4" blade and was made in 1/8" or 5/32" thickness. I think that would please a lot of folks.

The RC 5 is a indestructible piece of steel, and I love mine. However, it really depends on what you need it for. The thickness CAN be beneficial, but it can also be a pain.

Seems way too thick for most tasks IMO !

The RC4 has a handle that was too small for me though so it's a tough call !!!!

I have a RC 5, and like they say it is awesome and is a tank also. On the down side, the knife is a little thick and will not serve very well as a slicer. You probably want a RC 4 or RC 6:D

My suggestion is the RC-6 coaldigger. I think you will like that one!
