Okay, I went back 8 pages and did not find another thread like this so......

What would you put into your RAT Fire Kit?

Fishing hooks, line, etc?

What do you think!

What are the best dressed/filled Rat Fire Kits wearing these days?

Yep. Fill it with good emergency tinder. Mine is packed with fatwood shavings, fatwood dust, and pj cotton. One of those damn things is going to take a spark! I took the compass out of mine that came with it. I keep a much better compass in my pocket and that's just more room for tinder.

PJ cotton balls seems like a good choice. Burns for quite a while and lights easily.

Never tried the cotton balls and pj, will have to do that. I am the old dryer lint kinda guy, but I am willing to learn and implement new techniques :)

The pj burns for a long time. Lint is good for grabbing sparks and burning relatively fast. The rat kit is easily able to light pjcbs, and get the longer burntime.

Yep, I do the PJ and cotton thing. Stuffed enough in there for6 (?) fires.

I figure my fire kit is the place to carry my emergency tinder, since I need to have some anyway. Other survival stuff goes in other parts of my gear.

How do you mix up the cotton ball and pj?

Just on the outside, do you break the cotton ball in half and put the pj in the middle and reseal?

I kind of fluff out the cotton, put a big glob of PJ in the middle, then wrap the cotton around it. When I use it, I unfold it, make sure the PJ is well engrained int he center of the cotton, fluff the outside so it is easy to light, and then light it. The outside catches fire easily and burns extremely fast. When it gets to the PJ, it's hot enough to light it, the PJ burns for quite a few seconds, more than enough to get other tinder -- like shavings and/or a fuzz stick -- lit.

Looking at some of those youtube vids, wow, I like this a lot better than dryer lent.
It burns A LOT LONGER! Better to get things going with.

Thanks everyone!

I just put a glob of pj in a zip loc bag with a hand full of cotton balls and massage.

I use two inch diameter cotton makeup removal pads. Using the same method as Bohn. Toss a few in a ziplock, a glob of pj, And rub around. Then I'll stuff two of them into the back of each firekit, and bam! All set.

Or if you dont want to get goop all over the inside of your kit, just fill it with tinderquik tabs. They cost more than cotton balls, but they will burn wet, for a long time and dont make a mess.

They do work well. As do the cotton/PJ combo. Be sure to put some shavings or such in the kit with the firestarter, something to help get a base going. I also have a folded square of foil in my kit that I can 1) use as a base in the ground is soaking wet, or 2) unfold and use as a windscreen if need be. I think countrycomms has a "fire fixins" kit that is jute and fat wood that you can get for like $4 if you want. Magsticks scrappings work great too, and burn very hot.

You could also get some Wetfire tabs or the like and shave them down to size and fit one in there. Or you could shave one down to powder and just pour it in there. I'm not too worried about getting my fire kit goopy on the inside of the sealed container.

I think for the burn time, cost and it being semi water resistant, PJCB is tough to beat.

Wetfire will only store if its left in the case. If its taken out, over time it will lose its ignition properties.

Have another idea:

I put in and compressed some dryer lent, I also had some "micro" bubble wrap and put in two button batteries to go with my micro-light. I am also going to fold and place into it a $20 bill and a $10 bill for a small Emergency Cash Reserve.
