RAT Fire Kits....

I have a couple of the brass E&E compasses but they are way too expensive in my opinion. These little cheap compasses do ok in a pinch.

IMO thats what they are for anyway, basic direction. I just had to pitch my brunton compass cause it stoped working after less then a year.

I bet it was liquid filled.

I have found that when it comes to cheap button compasses the dry ones are better than the liquid filled.

Yeah it was liquid. one of there watch band models. Not a fan now, and im glad I check my gear if it had been in my PSK tin sealed up, I wouldnt have known untill I really needed it. I keep a earth magnet in my PSK for basic direction.

That'll work!

On the equator the sun is about as good of a general direction pointer as anything. Of course when you get higher (or lower) in latitude the sun gets lower in the horizon and makes it a little more difficult. We also teach our students that you can get a general idea of what time it is on the equator by the sun. You have 12 hours of daylight. The sun moves 15 degrees per hour. So when the sun is roughly 45 degrees in the sky it's either close to 9 AM or 3 PM. Works pretty good with an inclinometer found on compasses like the Ranger. Reason we teach this is we suggest anyone in the jungle stop moving around 3 PM and start building shelter since it gets dark in the jungle quick.

That makes perfect sense. With the jungle canopy, can it be hard to solar navigate like that? Dont mean to drift the Topic......

Sometimes, but there are always clearings...somewhere.

Guess I will see when I make it down!! Ya know, an earth magnet would be kinda cool to stick in the fire kit. They take up no room, I keep mine in the spy capsule with some spare flints for the sparker and other stuff. Hmm. very mini PSK? Man I cant wait till mine ships so I can play with some ideas.....

I have two of the NATO-Peyser brass button compasses and I'm sure I have not put them through the total wringer like some of you guys have but the way I chunk either a Maxpedition Pygmy Falcon II or a Fatboy Versipak across rooms into the closet, on the bed, in the trunk or swing and chunk across the seats of the car...well, one pair of Oakleys and one pair of Gargoyles have met their match inside that type of gear but a various assortment of compasses are rock steady.

At Bass Pro Shops, they have the Brunton Watchband Compass, when you pop it out, it appears to be a 20mm like the BCB and some others. I don't carry all of these different things at once, but I have not had one crap out yet.

Just put my order in for one as well... It will make a nice backup fire kit, looking forward to getting it in hand.
