rat folder

new rat folder would be great, but will have to stick to spyderco and emerson for the time being;)

I think that when it comes out.. It will be 440C. Considering they were thinking of making the RAT Pack knife in 440C, lets me know it's a stainless they do.

I suppose I'd be intrigued by a RAT folder, but I don't think it's necessary. A SAK or multitool, yes. But a straight up folder? I doubt I'll bite on that.

There may be a few situations where a folder would be preferable--folders are probably less conspicuous--but on balance the Izula seems to do pretty much anything a folder can do. And there aren't any parts to keep clean or break. Fixed blades have it all over folders in so many ways, and the Izula is so light and easy to carry.....what's the need for a folder?

I've used a Buck 110 on a couple survival courses and while camping/hunting/fishing and know that folders are very capable. My Sebenza is one of my favorite knives, but in general a fixie is the way to go in my mind. The Sebenza usualy sits in a drawer while the Izula is out having fun.

Maybe I'm missing something. Why are you guys hungry for a folding RAT?

Anyway to know if the folder will be ambidextrous? Im a lefty and often feel left out when companies make there knives for righty's only.

From a practical point of view, I have to agree with Rotte. I mean. I'd buy 'em, but I don't think they'd be used... Perhaps there are places where one is allowed to carry a folder like that and not a small fixed blade. I don't know (really, I don't :o) but in such a case I'd be very happy to have a R.A.T. folder in a drawer somewhere...

Input about places like that would be welcome.

On a different note: in my country, lawmakers are currently targeting 'easy to open' (the one-handed ones, auto's and switchblades are already illegal to carry) folders  The vast majority of people who ownes such a knife (any knife with a hole or thumb-notch which allowes it to be opened with one hand) don't know about or don't realise this (no publicity has been given to this subject yet...), but they will not be allowed to carry it outside of their own property. So, when a police officer sees a spyderco ladybug or SAK rescue type of knife in a handbag or car or something during a routine traffic control, they might be looking at a hefty fine at least! I'm not into folders, but I feel this sort of thing puts us on a gliding slope, so I'm supporting the action against it!

Sorry for the rant. How did I come to that?...Oh, yaaa, I suddenly realised that by the time those folders come out, they might not be legal for me to carry anymore, which off course makes purchasing them rather silly...

...or, I just leave 'em in the drawer (a R.A.T. safe queen, how 'bout that :D?)

Thanks,

D-R

I've been EDC'ing my Izula lately--I really love this little knife--but this thread prompted my to swap it out for my Lakota Pro'Hawk.

The Lakota feels twice as heavy, maybe more, built like a tank. It is slower to access and use. Compare the usable cutting edge of the two:

About the same amount of knife.

I've had the Pro'Hawk for 10 or 12 years (maybe more :o), but I think I paid about twice as much for it as I did for my more recently acquired Izula. That would be another problem with any decent folder: the manufacturing costs will make it significantly more expensive than a comparable fixie. I think I'd rather have 2 Izzies than one folder. :D

Just sayin'...

I prefer a small fixed blade for EDC, more like the RC-3 size than the Izula.

Now I spent my first 30 years in the communist state of New Jersey. There, even a diminutive blade like the Izula would be illegal as it's a fixed blade and falls under the "dirk or dagger" wording of the law.

I carried a folding blade every day of my life there and it served me pretty well, but a fixed serves me better.

I do like to have some folders in stock, all Spyderco nowadays, but a RAT folder would most likely take over that pocket time.

A RAT folder I think will be nice, but do agree I do not think it is necessary. Izula is a great EDC knife I feel.

I like to change up what I carry. Some days its nice to have a small fixed blade but I don't want to carry the same thing day in and day out. I like to rotate and try out new blades all the time! A Rat folder would be awesome. We know it's going to be designed for hard use...which you don't see a lot in folders....so that's already a plus over other folding designs!
