RAT Model 1 folder - durability?

Thanks very much for the replies.

I'm leaning towards the black coated blade after reading Oguruma's post, as I intend to use the knife for river fishing, and I must admit I don't care for my blades very well.

Than you really should reconsider getting something that is not a carbon steel blade. Spyderco Salt 1 is a great fishing knife, the blade, lock, etc will not rust.

Very true & then you don't need it to be coated anymore, either. The Salt 1, Atlantic, or Pacific Salt are all nice.

a "certain knife reviewer" used it as a spear. He taped it to a long wooden pole and stabbed many layers of thick cardboard with it. Not a totally realistic test, but it would put a lot of stress on the lock and pivot.
The knife held up absolutely fine with a bit of play afterward. The play was instantly removed with lightening up the loosened pivot.

Great knife, I really want to get one myself.

I have never had AUS8 rust and i've been using it for at least 10 years in various knives. The satin finish of the Rat 1 will help to resist rust also but truthfully until it happens I wouldn't worry.

The Rat 1 is a exceptional value and a amazing knife, the lock is strong, the plastic handle feels like G10, and the blade has a very good heat treatment providing excellent performance.

Its a "must own" knife IMO

And at the price you can buy one for there really isn't a valid excuse for anyone to not own one!

It's tough, cheap, FFG - what knife could anyone name that costs less and is better? It's hard enough to find a one handed opener for less money, let alone a better one then the RAT-1.

I just received a replacement RAT-1 from Ontario because I complained to them that my RAT-1 was difficult to open with my thumb using a slow motion or a thumb flick. I also find it difficult to close. In all of the YouTube videos on the RAT-1 everyone flicks this knife open as if it was an assisted opener.
The replacement I received today is more difficult to open than the one I sent back. I have loosened the pivot screw with no improvement. I have no trouble opening knives by Gerber, Spyderco and KA-BAR using the thumb flick.
Several YouTubers have complained that they also have trouble opening the RAT-1. One person said he needed a pry bar and a John Deere tractor to open his, but most seem to have no trouble. Any thoughts? Thanks.

I bought a satin & black as posted earlier. The satin fired out and the black was a bear to open, opening the pivot didn't help as you mentioned. I kept playing with it for a couple of weeks and now it's as simple as the satin model.

I'm saying to give it some time and it (should) will fire open with a little wrist action while starting the blade out. Good luck :D

I only have one - but it is the satin one. Like yours it fires out real well - no wrist action needed whatsoever. Maybe the coating on the black ones offer slightly more friction at least when you first get them?

It is a favorite of mine. I had the coated one, but it just chipped off. So, I just sanded it off. It makes it look really ugly. Its one of the best and strongest liner locks I have. It is a very durable blade.

i have the coated one and i love it. one of the best knives for the price range and definitely a must have knife.
