Rat Pack - Yet Another Knife Kit! (Pics)

where did you get that drop leg attachment?

Here it is: http://www.weaponsessentials.com/pd_4.cfm

I found it elsewhere, but they were cheaper from these guys. It did take a while to get to me, however. I really like this as it allows me to keep the knife on my belt but it is low enough so that it doesn't interfere with my fannypack.

Thanks for the comments guys. A couple of changes are in order. First, the "lanyard" was useless for its intended purpose and got in the way. I'll have to work on that.

I have something similar going on in my rtak2 sheath. (Mines nearly over stuffed though) Good idea about the bags on the back side too. Might wanna consider a small sharpening device? too.

i need to find a similar sheath for my tak1. i have tried putting stuff into a pouch then lashing onto the stock sheath, but i didnt like that much.

sweet ass kit BTW flix

I find the zip-ties and duct tape to be crucial items. Always have them on hand, as well as my first aid kit which is.

Duct tape

Super glue

Vicodin

If I can't fix it with that I'm screwed no matter what I do.

Looks like a good bit kit you have there but can you explain the idea of having the Lanyard attached with the split ring, I can't see the point ?

Hi Pit,

The whole lanyard thing was a bit of an experiment. Since I didn't know exactly know what I was doing, I thought I might want to be able to detach it.

After testing the knife, I found the lanyard was not functional as a lanyard, and wore, it kept getting in the way during chopping. The result was dammaged paracord.

I'll put together another lanyard, probably with a wooden bead on it to alter the loop size so it will keep the knife secure during chopping.

I really like carrying this knife with the drop-leg attachment on my right side. Of course, this means my 629 is going to have to find a new home! A shoulder rig would be okay if I'm not wearing a pack, otherwise I may have to go to crossdraw. Then again, it might be better to get used to the RAT being carried crossdraw. maybe some of you SAR guys will have some insight.

Yeah I have often wondered if some of these fancy lanyards are practical.
I put mine on just for function to secure my hand when chopping. My extra Paracord is in my kit !

For anyone interested in their knots, I tie mine off with a Riggers Bend !

Flix,
You inspired me to work up my RTAK II.
Once done will put up a pick, still playing with the right lanyard.

But so far in the pouch:
A plastic fan deck of knot diagrams...I never remember them
Mag Stick
mini light
whistle
lansky sharpener
standard bic as well

under the pouch manged to wrap 40 feet of paracord and in the second round fed it thru a leatherman wave pouch, fits perfect and tight...does make it a bit heavier though.

Stole your idea for the compass, works well there

And around back, a plastic bag, and 6 wrap ties. Also manged to fit 6 wrapties in sheath atop the plastic knife sheath insert, just the heads stick out completely out of the way.

Just want to add some water pure tabs.

Rest of stuff plan on a hip first aid kit to cover essentials, plastic sheet and such.

Thanks for the inspiration, loving it so far.

Now need to replofile the edge, ordered the pink course rods.

Hi Guyver,

Sounds good! I'm glad you were inspired. I look forward to seeing pictures. :)

Very nice kit.

Attaching a lanyard to your body and a gun makes sense, because it keeps your weapon with you, but a knife is different, so my thoughts on placing the lanyard around your wrist while using the knife are that if the knife slips from your hand, and it can, then you have an out of control tool that can do some major damage to your body as it swings. The lanyard should be utilized to make sure that the blade doesn't slip from your hand.

wow! great setup!

i'm still wondering about buying the rat-5 or rat-7

guess to complement a F1 the 7 is best, but to replace the F1 the F5 is best :/

i got a minitultitool like that, but never found any use fer it, the thing seems quite useless to me

I like this a lot. I'm curious on specifics on re-profiling the edge... why did you chose to? What was it, and what did you go to? Also, how did you tie the lanyards? I have a few methods of getting 12' into a short lanyard, but man, it takes some serious time to untie it.

Naked,

I reprofiled the edge of my RAT-7 because it was way too obtuse. There are several threads on doing this. I used the Spyderco Sharpmaker with aftermarket stones.

The lanyards, like the rest of this setup, are a work in progress. In the pictures here, I was using a hangman's knot. This is an effective way to attach some cordage to something, but doesn't make an effective lanyard or leg tie down.

For the time being, the sheath has migrated from my belt to horizontal carry on the bottom of my fanny pack. The drop sheath is being used to lower my 629's holster under the pack's hip belt.
