RAT People of Kentucky

I'm sorry Hunt. I didn't mean to offend you or anyone else from that area. I was just using the term that someone else had used. Please know that I honestly meant no harm to the area by using that term.

You should see the stuff I deal with for living so close to Detroit.

The label "Pillbillies" and other stereotypes that have been exaggerated over the years are a combination of judgmental stupidity, our countries inevitable drug problem, and (more than likely) the movie Deliverance (which btw was actually filmed in Georgia).

I was born and raised in Eastern Ky, where growing up in a traditionally modest but well-established (not to mention beautiful) town thankfully provided me with a strong culture based on family values and common sense, and I plan to return after law school, so my future children can value the same captivating experience.

The fact that Oxycontin ("Hillbilly Heroin") has poisoned our society can be attributed to Purdue Pharma's obsessive greed, lack of moral values, and their accessive promotion (in NC,SC,KY,TN,VA,WV,+OH) of the drug without warning consumers of its highly addictive properties.
The rest of America had seen the effects of heroin, cocaine, crystal meth, etc, so the new and available drug that had swept Eastern Ky became popular worldwide and further deformated our reputation.

I didn't mean to rant and rave, but I just HATE the "Pillbilly" stigma and didn't want it to affect anyone's decision to visit or inhabit such an extraordinary region.

BTW! The Rambo series of knives will always be some of the most (if not the most) popoular knives in any movies.
The blade in Predator was sweet, but didn't get enough screen time.
The Relentless created / TOPS produced "M4X Punisher" used in the new Punisher movie is a wicked design and a great feeling knife. (even if the movie was just "ok")
And the knife used in The Hunted (W/ Tommy Lee Jones and Benicio Del Torro), which is produced by TOPS (Tracker) and RedScorpion6 (Raven WSK), is by far my favorite movie knife, and I would EDC my Raven WSK for the rest of my days if it didn't scare the hell out of everyone.

Thanks,

-Hunt
Good post. You can't blame the addicts any more than the corrupt doctors, the Pharm. sales reps and companies.

Hey, sounds like the modern day version of "You'll never leave Harlan alive" song.

Thanks oruacat2,

I am familiar with that type of set up. I did missionary work on the border towns of Mexico, no middle class, the rich got richer and the poor got poorer.

I have seen the "haves" manipulate the system. One area was housing, even though there was a GREAT need for apartments, there were none to be found, only a few that only a few people owned :). Politics is very scary in those types of climates.

Hello, Pastor Marko. I also live in Kentucky. My home is in Madisonville, the heart of the western Ky. coalfield. I have been collecting knives for about 10 yrs. If you ever come this far south, let me know and maybe we can meet up and compare knives.:D

I grew up in north eastern kentucky. I miss it a lot and the gorge is a great place for backpacking.

A word of caution as a fellow pastor. Don't underestimate the "heritage' that is Christianity. It can be a hard wall to break through. Also don't underestimate how closed off people can at times be to "outsiders." If you don't have longstanding roots in the local community it can be an issue.

There are places where if you aren't related you need to watch yourself. Not trying to hype a stereotype but I've been met with a shotgun a few times growing up:)

All the way around Kentucky is a great place to be and be from.

I'm in Bowling Green. A couple hours from where you'll be. There is some pretty areas over there. The gorge as has been mentioned, Cumberland Falls State Park (which has other falls you can hike to, I think it was Yahoo falls or Eagle falls I don't remember for sure but it was really nice, I liked it better) Natural Bridge State Park, Daniel Boone Natl Forest. and others.

kyturkey, great post on the contest site. I still have to go out and make a bow drill and hand drill myself this winter. You make it look easy, LOL. I know it is hard; been studying on it for a while. I look forward to seeing some of the places you spoke about in this post as well. Thanks :)
