How many of you guys use them? What are the ups and downs of the RT, and how is it for an EDC? And how tough are they? (Yes, I know about the warranty :) ) Never having had one, I just picked one up and am trying to learn a little more. Thanks.

Well, mine is definitely in the folder rotation and even though I don't baby it at all I use a folder for folder jobs and straight blades for straight blade jobs. I think the last time I used mine was to open up a bag of Cheese-its for the grandkids while traveling.

I actually have two Rat Traps, one with a serial number and one without. I have the non-serial numbered one in my EDC rotation. It is an excellent slicer. I find that it is also light for it's size and it has a relatively slim profile.

+1 on that.

I like mine, but have to admit I do tend to baby it a bit, and have taken it out of EDC rotation. There is NOTHING wrong with it. It just does not seem that it will hold up to the bush crafting chores I will put it up to. Yes, I know the warranty is going to cover it, but I Like the knife enough so I don't want to lose it because of over stress. Also, it does open a little to readily, and has bit me in the thigh a couple of times.

well I love mine:)

I have 4 with three different blade markings.

Its my EDC but I am not real hard on a knife. Atleast, not a folder.

However, I do find myself feeling a little thin with it for an emergency.

I may really push one and see what she's made of since I have a backup.

While I didn't throw away my other folders, for all the use they get after I got my Rat Trap, I might as well have.

It's a feeling I can relate with, as a past owner of one. The Trap has such a great blade shape and size ( probably as close to perfect for my EDC requirements ), and it carried so small for its size, it was darn close to my folder grail. It is probably just a "feeling" thing for me, but if the liners were a little thicker, it would have been the One that would have never left my pocket.

Did I hear someone say something about a Busse folder??:):)

The Rat Trap does not have the "hard use" feel of my Strider SnG but is very easy to carry and a LOT of blade for the mass/weight.

Yep, I agree on the blade size. Even though it's not a huge knife by any means, when you compare the open size to the compact closed/carry size, it's a lot of knife. And it's more comfortable to carry than a lot of smaller knives.

I love mine. It was never very hard to open - the action is smooth and the lock-up seems just about right. At least it's never come open when I didn't want it to. Yours will probably become smoother/easier with a break-in period.

As far as being tough, I've never really strained it too hard. I've popped tips on Spydercos and others before, generally doing what they weren't meant to do. My EDC "roatation" is my Rat Trap, a Griptilian and a Skeleton Warden. The Warden gets the abuse, the Griptilian gets the medium duty and the Rat Trap I try to take care of. I don't "baby" it really, just watch what I'm doing a little closer. This isn't so much because it can't take a little punishment, but they're not that easy to replace any more.

Oh, congRats, by the way! :D:thumbup:

I've purchased eleven Rat Traps over the years and I think I've covered all the variations as far as numbered, choil size, clip finish, etc. Outside of those safe-queens I have one from the original batch that's been in my EDC rotation for years and it is one of my favorites. I love how thin it is and how it disappears in the pocket. Also takes a great edge and is very easy to keep sharp.

This was my first one but it has never been used, just fondled.

I picked up 3 at the Fall 2007 Knob Creek. I sold one (at cost) to a fellow at the Scrap Yard forum who hadn't been able to go nearly immediately, then traded another (for a 2007 SE Leaner Meaner w/ sheath -- I included a Swamp Warden to help even things out a bit) several months later. The last one remains in the plastic sleeve it came in. It's a good folder and I wish I'd bought more, mainly because they're always in such high demand, but it's a bit larger than I like to carry. I have no doubt that they're tough, but I also believe they probably don't get abused as much as other folders in their class because they're so hard to replace. They're very nice to have, but if you can't pick one up for retail, I'd buy a different folder rather than paying secondary market prices for a Rat Trap.

I've carried mine exclusively since they were released. I use it for everything from making sheaths to tightening the occasional screw.

Holds a great working edge and has done everything I've ever asked of it.

I've carried mine a couple times but it's too big for my taste in folders. :o

Used mine extensivly during my last deployment... thanks again Eric et al!

I picked up a user and I found that this 'big' knife just disappears in my pocket. The knives in this class that I carry, Spyderco Military and Para Military, both blend in well. If it weren't for the darned 'tip down carry' on the Rat Trap it would out shine them all. 'Tip down carry'.... what were they thinking!!!

currently have two… its one of my favourite EDC
I really want if someone could make framelock conversion preserving slim profile
That imo would made it perfect!
