Rat Trap owners...

I bought my Rat Trap when they were first introduced. I carry and use it daily. I wouldn't go as far as to say I abuse it but I never think about "taking care" of it. If I need to use it for a tough job I use it. Period. After several years of such use, it is still in great shape and is still my only EDC folder. My other folders (including a Spyderco Military, which is as close to the RT as you're going to get) are now kept in a drawer. I keep thinking I'll end up getting a Sebenza once I wear out my Rat Trap, but the damn thing just keeps performing. It probably could use a bit of a tune up at this point because the lock up isn't as smooth as when new, but it's one hell of a knife otherwise and definitely one of the best that Swamp Rat has produced thus far. I wish they still made them.

I really like the slim profile....keen edge, but the liner lock.....it is a turn off for me......

Also the washers are flimsy plastic......not the sturdiest.

It is an excellent slicer and for what it is used for...it excels....but with all Busse products..I want to push it, but am apprehensive to push this too hard....Frame lock with a Ti side and I would have been thrilled!

I picked up 3 at the Fall 2007 Knob Creek. I sold one (at cost) to a fellow at the Scrap Yard forum who hadn't been able to go nearly immediately, then traded another (for a 2007 SE Leaner Meaner w/ sheath -- I included a Swamp Warden to help even things out a bit) several months later....

I carry and use that Rat Trap every day. I love it. I never used the Meaner, the handle didn't fit me as well as the "mudder" on the similar Street Scrapper 4. The Rat Trap is slim and and has a nice large slicing blade. If I need something for hard use, it won't be a folder or a small fixed blade. For everyday cutting needs, that RT is perfect. Now that it is broken in, it opens smooth and easy.

Hate tip down!! Had to have the Folding Rat though!!! No Ratgrets here! Been carry mine for 3 days now. Opened a big bag of bird seed.

I carry and use my Rat Trap every day. It is a fine cutter and carries nice and slim for a big knife. I love it. Since I was used to carrying a CS Voyager lockback in the tip up position, it took a little while for me to adjust to the linerlock and the tip down carry. Now is seems as fast and natural to me as the lockback once did.

What:D?

Seriously Busse is not a folder maker and I would not expect them to perfect it first time out. When they do I will be first in line or try to be.;)

Skam

Sorry, didn't really mean it to sound too offensive (or defensive, for that matter). I just find it odd that you take a stab at Busse for not knowing about folders over the tip-up / tip-down issue. It seems to me that too many people like the Rat Trap for Busse to not know about folders.

The tip-up / tip-down thing is a conscious decision made by every knife maker that offers pocket-clip folders. All of them have their own ideas as to why one way is better than the other. Some offer both designs because they know users also have preferences.

It's understandable if the knife's not for you. I suppose it struck a nerve that a blanket statement like that would be used because of a design feature that's simply not to your liking.

Question,
I understand that the RAT Trap was actually manufactured for SwampRat by someone else. I got that from a fairly good source. Is that not true?

Yep, Blade Tech. Pics of the Rat Trap and the Blade-Tech Hunter together show how they are of almost identical construction.

Which brings up a good point. Jerry apparently went to someone in the industry who I would say has learned a thing or two about folders, considering Mr. Wegner's successful history.

Who knows? When Jerry releases his own infamous folder (two weeks? :D), it might even be tip-up carry, or at least be convertible between up and down. He's known for giving the people what they want, as long as it meets his criteria for quality.

I don't think Infi would be an Ideal material in a folder.........doesn't seem to be designed for short applications and when zero'd edged.......well, it rolls a bit.

I agree, although I'd also probably end up with one anyway.

INFI's best attribute is to go through hell and come out the other side in better condition than anything else out there. By their nature, folders aren't "go through hell" knives in the first place.

Without a doubt I would get one! Have you tried one of Carrillo's folders...Tripwire.....Those are tougher than some fixed blades!

But like it is said.......for a slicer and folder task....the Rat Trap is certainly a top notch blade.
