RAT1 vs Cryo - cheap hard use military folder

Of the two you ask about, I'd have to agree the RAT-1 would be the better choice, as much as I like the Cryo. Unless you feel the smaller Cryo would satisfy your needs.

I agree the Spyderco Tenacious would also be a good choice, and personally I prefer it over the RAT-1.

If I may add one more:
Kabar Dozier PhattBob
Darn nice beater at just under $50.

Those are two very different knives. For EDC, I'd pick the Cryo. For something to serve as a beater, the RAT-1. The Cryo is plenty tough as well, but there's just more size and steel behind the RAT-1, which might make it better suited to some abuse.

How about a Cold Steel Voyager? They are around 45 dollars and the Tri-Ad lock is ridiculously strong.

Bingo, if you're looking for a bullet proof beater at a affordable price, the CS voyager is the best in the biz. The design does nothing for me personally, but for a hard use beater knife, design would be secondary.

No doubt in my mind it would be the RAT 1. I have had mine for about three years now and it is my favorite EDC beater knife that I use in my construction work. I does every dirty, ugly job I don't want to use my smaller traditionals on, and it still locks up like a bank vault. Plenty of handle to get a good grip on, and the ergos are great. I use it to cut fiberglass banding materials, roofing materials on occasion, sheetrock sometimes, trim wood framing parts, sharpen my pencils, and on an on. It is a true working man's knife. When I get too much adhesive or tar on it, I simply clean it with charcoal lighter fluid, put a drop or two of oil on the pivot and back in the pocket it goes.

I have the Tenacious and like it a lot, but it is too slab sided (wide) for my taste in pocket carry. The less wide RAT rides well when clipped in, and I find the blade shape of the RAT better suits my utility needs.

When this RAT finally does crap out (it might outlast me, though...) I will be glad to put my hard earned money down to get another one.

I like the Cryo for a Kush EDC but for the money you should check out the Buck Vantage Avid Tactical @ $50 "on the big auction website"it's a great knife with a great Sandvik steel blade made in the good old USA.

I own all three and I'd pick the Tenacious, followed by the RAT 1 and finally the Cryo.

I work with gloves all day long, every day and use my work knife pretty hard. The Tenacious is by far the easiest to open with gloves of all kinds, including mechanics gloves and thick leather, as well. The G-10 has considerably better traction than the FRN-ish material of the RAT and I find the clip more comfortable as well. I've beaten the daylights out of the Tenacious and for all it's been through, it really doesn't look bad at all. It locks up like new and works just as it always has.

Between the RAT and the Cryo? RAT a thousand times over. The longer FFG blade cuts much better than the Cryo in my experience and the handle is a lot more comfortable as well. Again, if you're wearing gloves, the liner lock of the RAT is much easier to manipulate than the frame lock of the Cryo.
