The mailman quit slacking and got me my RAT Pack knife:
Obviously, I was pleased to see the package.
Had to check out the knife first, of course. The note was a neat touch!
A couple quick comparisons to my other RC-3, now about 2 years old. It's seen quite a bit of use. Still holding up great, though. Some recent batonning hasn't done any favors to the powder coating, but it looked very good until then.
A few quick observations: The RAT Pack knife came with MOLLE locks instead of the MOLLE backing of the other RC-3. The sheath now has the RAT logo molded into it, looks pretty good in my opinion. The survival card has also changed slightly, as you can see here. Although the RC-3s on the old one are neat, in a survival situation I think the new design would be a bit more appreciated.
Quick in hand shot. I know a lot of people have said the G-10 doesn't feel as grippy as micarta, but this stuff is definitely rough and grippy, especially on the unmilled flats. Rougher than the linen micarta on my RC-3, although it doesn't seem like it will be uncomfortable. The RAT Pack screws look good. The ESEE logo is very nice, I like it a lot. The black/orange color combination looks fine to me as well. I MUCH prefer the rounded pommel. Although the pointed pommel isn't bad, it does tend to poke me from time to time, which is uncomfortable but not unbearable. The rounded pommel gives me none of those issues.
One more mediocre picture. I'll try to get up early tomorrow and go out for a short hike to get some better pictures. This is a good looking, cool knife.
One last note, the knife didn't really come as sharp as I'd like a knife to be. That's fine. I usually reprofile the edge of a knife I will use a lot anyway, and this knife will be no exception. Time to grab the DMT stones and go to work.
