Ok, so there is RAT Cutlery, and then Ontario has a RAT line, which seems to look almost, but not quite identical.

Can some one enlighten me please?
What's the story?

Very simple, Jeff Randall and Mike Perrin of Randall's Adventure Training (RAT) had a Survival School and Adventure Travel gig going and had some very good ideas about what would make a good line of survival knives. They had a line of knives that they designed and were made by Ontario Knife Co. As with most relationships in life, the nature of that relationship changed over time and they wanted to, and did form their own cutlery company, RAT Cutlery. But Ontario is still making the older line of knives, which are great knives, I've owned a few of them and still own a RAT-7.

I think anything beyond that would require the input of Mr. Randall or Perrin, I am not their Spokesman, but I am available for speaking engagements at $350.00 per hour, plus travel and expenses. :D

Oh no!!! I don't have one of them things! A Motorola Razor is more than enough aggravation for me, please. :)

Some stores refer to their Ontario RAT knives as discontinued. This seems to coincide with Ontario getting their Ranger series of knives into stores. Perhaps we'll see the Ontario lawyers settling their issues with Rat Cutlery before the courts finally drag it out to a conclusion.

As we have said here many times, we truly wish Ontario the best and have no hard feelings. Ontario is a great old American company that has paid its dues many times over in this industry. Lots of good people that work there. This industry is way too small for pissing contests among the players.

RAT will continue on doing what we do.

Onward!

Pacifist! :D

You sell yourself short Sir - if you're going to be a bear, be a grizzly. Speaking fee's need to start at $1000 per hour plus travel and per diem or no one will even begin to take you seriously...

It is comments like this that make me all the more determined to support RAT Cutlery!

You guys are def. a class act and seem to be stand up people. I look forward to doing business with you.

Don't know if you have ever been to a Blade Show but it's not that big of a hall. Everyone that's anyone in the knife business is set up in that hall. My point is this: This industry is relatively small compared to most industries. It just doesn't pay to have pissing contests. I admit I was upset when I found out that Ontario was trying to trademark names that we own and I probably popped off more than I should have in my moment of anger, but life goes on and whatever our differences are is for a court to decide. I have no problem saying I'm sorry for being angry and bringing it to the forums. If Nick Trbovich or anyone else at Ontario called and asked for my help right now, I'd help them. With all that said, we will continue to fight through the legal system for what's right. We own the RAT name, plain and simple and we have no intention of giving it up.

Jeff

Wouldn't a "Sticky" be easier to inform people about the differences?

Like a Title:

"THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN RAT CUTLERY and ONTARIO RATS" ... something eye catching? Without Ill Will.. just the facts...

I have seen a few of these "Questions / Confused Parties" Lately. Not anyone's fault.. but a Sticky may save ALOT of Typing by the Experts on the whole thing.

People never read the stickies..........this is common knowledge.....

Jeff you shouldn't back away from your posts in the forums - you wouldn't be human if the situation hadn't rankled a bunch. I own a couple of Ontario RATs and a bunch of real RATS, just as I own a couple of Ontario Rangers and a fair number of Justin's originals, and the real deals are just better knives. We should wish Ontario well but you folks and guys like Justin at Ranger set the standard for quality and service.

I think there is enough animosity amongst the Rat Pack to show how we feel about Ontario, enough so that Rat can be calm and cool when dealing with Ontario and not cause problems. Hopefully our animosity will give Ontario a "clue", and help them realize the originals are the only option and we aren't gonna buy any substitutes!!!

That's just it, guys. We don't want any animosity towards Ontario. Like I said, the industry is big enough for everyone even though it's relatively small.

Just my point, there are many people that believe there should be animosity on RAT's side. Which I believe there is more than enough in the RAT Pack, there will always be someone with animosity, you can't please everyone and never will. Not to mention that some people just love to be antogonists and dramatic. Jeff I completely agree on your stance, there is just no point and let the system sort it out. However, mean time, your satisfied customers will profess the superiority of the real RATs.
