RAT's Start

I'm not sure I would know how to do it any other way. Never liked "canned" trips. The whole idea of adventure travel, to me, is to have an adventure in your travels. If everything goes by a schedule, that's not much of an adventure. Having problems, getting "lost", not knowing what to expect, etc. is all part of the adventure. Some of the best times we have had in South America is when everything went wrong.

I understand completely, and that was about the same for me as I explored the states.... in hindsight my guess is it just never occured to me to do it. My upbringing.... well lets just say that taking off and exploring "wasn't done", especially in anything like a 3rd world country. That in my parents and grandparents opinions was just asking for trouble, and I never realized until I just started thinking about it, how the sterotypes of my parents effected me.

The hardest part for some adventures is the unkown. How do I start...sure I can get to the amazon but where do I go once I'm there and what do I do once I'm there.

Theres just more to me in life then tons of money, huge homes, and other crap. Not that I dont enjoy luxuries and having $ to buy things I want, but these people who spend all their lifes grinding away to accumulate fortunes and then die with all this money in the bank. Why? Why, werent you out spending that $ having the time of your life.

There will be no total $ amount earn on my grave stone like some kind of real life video game score. No one will care or remember, however they will always know me for the stuff I've done

You're already missing the whole point of adventure travel if you're having to ask yourself that question.

......... Some of the best times we have had in South America is when everything went wrong.

I spent the first half of my life being afraid to travel too far from home because of the opposite mentality. I focused on the destination and worried about the journey.

Took me a long time and alot of flubbed trips to realize that the journey is the fun part, the destination is an end.

Now I have kids and a broken down van or a flipped canoe can be alot more of a hassle. So I'm back to being worried about travel, but now I do it anyway.

Can't wait until the kids are a bit older and more self sufficent, things'll be alot more exciting for us.
