RAT's suggested boot

For summer and general working boots I own a top of the line pair of Timberland Pros. My second pair; the first lasted many years and I finally bought a new pair after the leather worn away from the steel toes. They breathe well and are very comfortable.

For winter/snow/extremely wet conditions I own a pair of 10" tanker boots. The boots themselves are not well insulated, but that's when thick wool socks come in.

most of the time i wear danner combat boots, with gortex. they work well in the weather here in texas and are very comfortable, in hot weather or very wet i wear a pair of old gi jungle boots i've had them for years. the belleview combat boots are very comfortable too.

Do all the issue/official jungle boots have a steel plate or some kind of puncture protection in the sole?

if boots are going to get wet an option to look at - rocky gore-tex oversocks. Work great for me. Yo put them on top of your usual socks (so get proper size!)

Fair enough, they're perfect for me, but I live in Queensland, Australia. We were in a drought for quite some time, and there are still water restrictions today.;)

We're pretty much the same down in Victoria, I'm running a pair of bates

I'm not sure why they have them. I believe the boots issued to tanker crews also have a steel plate. And jumper boots look steel toe. Not sure on any of this and likely, I'm wrong. Anyone want to jump in here and enlighten us?

I think tanker boots and most others have a steel shank in the sole so if landing on your feet from a high place (say parachuting out of a plane), the boot won't flex to the point of snapping your foot. I'm not shure what size or shape that shank is though, it could cover the whole sole.

I belive there were plates built into those jungle boots to prevent things like this from going through the bottom; although if you fell into that, you'be be f$%ed in a few other areas;

I have been wondering what boot most would wear around here, guess there is something to be said for the design of the trusty combat boot. in all of it's many variations!

If I'm going wet (over the ankle) then it's Altama jungle boots with some good wonder walker soles inside. Gore-tex boots simply trap all the water inside if it goes over the top. I hate 'em. Jungle boots drain. Of course, this is for sub-tropical to tropical environments also.

Like you said Jeff for Sub-Tropical to Tropical environments. For me up here in a temperate environment I LOVE Gor-tex, especially the 8 in leather variety. But then again up here I rarely find myself heading into water over 6 in deep, and if I do find it I usually go around.

As far as gor-tex breathing it does, and does an excellent job. But when you compare any waterproof boot to non waterproof the non waterproof is going to breath better no matter what. Where you get the breathability from is that they tend to breath much better then the competition, does. Although this isn't really as true any more because a lot of companies are making really good waterproof breathable boots.
