I'm thinking about using a rattan wrap on my knife handles... I did a web search and only found 1 or 2 knives with rattan handles... (IC Cut Aogami knives) I'm wondering if there are drawbacks to this material... anyone have any experience in rattan?

Just means nobody here has done it. Give it a shot and let us know how you fare!

Was that a tumbleweed that just rolled by? I feel so alone.

That is definately one of the more tactful ways of bumping your post, pretty funny! Refresh my memory, rattan is that bamboo kinda stuff used to wrap wicker chairs? If that is the case I would venture to say that if not sealed properly it has the potential to rot if gotten wet repeatedly, or left in the sun to get dried out. But, nobody these days lets a knife out in the elements on purpose.

A lot of people resin soak cord wrapped handles. I wonder if it would work the same on rattan. I know it absorbs water, maybe resin too?

rattan is great stuff, but I'm more used to it in terms of staves and sticks for martial arts. it's a great long fibered, tough material. I imagine you need to soak it to get a tight wrap, which would be fine for gluing down with a water curing polyester glue (? anyone?) and then you could add wood hardener once it dried out really well.

as a hidden tang material... well. I may have to try that out.
