Rattlesnakes in NJ?

They seem to be more common in North west and northern jersey. I havent seen one in the pine barrens near me. Maybe a few gardner snakes but nothing like that. So far at least.

Timber rattlers inhabit most of NY and NJ up north to the adirondak range.... Massaguas livein the NW portion of the state..Copper heads are far more wide spread however....

THe rattlers (at least the few Ive seen) seem to prefer focky ledges in the mountains where they can sun themselves, an not be bothered.. also look for chipmunk sign..if theres allot the snakes won;t be far.

I wouldn;t stress it to much though....

They also Like to lay under things like fallen logs, This is why it is always a good idea to step on( then step off) downed trees and not over(stradling). We had a case in Watchung a few years back where someone stepped over a fallen tree and startled a snake that repleid with a bite to his calf.

I live in Maryland. Last week my daughter found what I thought was a three foot long blacksnake cooling itself between a window and storm window. I knocked it out and it coiled on the window ledge. When I went to knock it off of the ledge, I swear it began to rattle (first time I was ever grateful for the 18" Ontario military machette). The animal control guy swore there were no rattle snakes in Maryland. I do (or did) have a chipmunk problem. I dunno, but I'm sure taking much better care of that 18" Ontario.

Many non-venomous species will vibrate their tails against dried leaves or similar materials when they are agitated (perhaps, to mimic a rattlesnake ). There are indeed timber rattlesnakes in Maryland but they are fairly uncommon. I have spent most of my life in this state and I have never come across one.
