Rattling khukuri

I picked up a 15 inch 20 ounce satisal wood handle Ang Khola by Amtrak Kami from 1/25 Knife Clearance and took it out today for some small clearing of some 3'' trees that were in the way and after about 30 mins of work I was done and went to clean the kukuri and noticed it now rattles slightly. Everything apears to be tight but you can slightly hear the rattle and feel it when you move it back and forth. Does anyone know what I can do to fix this?

Sounds to me like somehow the laha didn't quite take, in the handle. I'd send a note to Yangdu - one way or the other, she'll make it right.

Skyler,

Does it rattle in the handle? Or is it more severe? Is the buttcap loose? Sometimes the laha in the handle can have a chunk break off and move around inside the handle, at least from what I have read. I have only had this happen once on a sword, and drilled a small hole in the buttcap and filled it with superglue. Some folks heat up the handles in hot water, or use a heat gun to remelt the laha.

Sorry this happened to you on your first HI knife. That one had been sitting for a long while I take it.

Hope this helps.

The butt cap is tight, it seems that it only rattles in the handle almost like the khukuri tang is loose inside the handle. I have only had it for a short while (about 4 days) and this is the first time I have used it. I have other HI khukuris and so far everything else has been perfect.

There was a recent thread about this. If you heat the handle and get the laha flowing then allow it to reset it ususally solves the problem. Unfortunately you've either got to boil the handle (wrapped in plastic bag first), or heat it with a heat gun. Laha stinks, so I'd use the heat gun and do it outside.

I don't think the tang itself is loose in the handle, else you would see movement of the blade in relation to the handle, or I guess I just should have said seen the handle moving back and forth. They drill out the handle and fill it with laha, and then shove the hot tang down inside the hole. It's more likely that it is just an errant piece of laha I think.

If it was me I'd send it back for a non rattling replacement. I had a rattler and the handle eventually broke. Tang was fine. My bet is the handle is not filled enough with laha. You could also remove the handle and fill with epoxy if the blade really appeals to you.

Look at the pommel,if you see steel your good (this means it's a full tang) I would do what Svashtar said and find a way to fill the handel.

Thanks for all those who replied, I decided to email Yangdu about it and what would be the best option and she said to just send it back for a replacement. I can never say enough good things about Himalayan Imports

I'm impressed. You bought this khuk from a 2nd party right? and Yangdu is still replacing it? That's some amazing customer service!

I have a 15" AK that has a rattle in the handle. I use it to entertain myself musically on rainy days. ;)
