Raw Potato Patina?

I used balsamic vinegar to get a nice black coating on my opine #8. I wetted a paper towel with the vinegar and then wrapped the wet paper towel around the blade. Added a bit more vinegar to the paper towel and let it sit over night. In the morning wiped it off, dried and re-applied for one more day.

Did a nice job on the knife. Now I use it to cut up my daily grapefruit without fear of rusting the blade. Opinel's make the best grapefruit knives!!!

I used apple vinegar on my 510 too, and I learned a neat trick. After about two hours, have the hot tap water ready at the sink. Then pull your knife out of the vinegar and give a nice snap downward, to get most of the vinegar off. Now, hold the knife horizontal as you walk in and turn on the tap water to HOT. When you rinse and dry the knife, it will leave lines of discoloration similar to damascus! Give it a try (if you can stomach the vinegar smell - it doesn;t stay on the knife).

I think its when you put your knife in between a couple of slices of bread and add some turkey for a Patina sandwich.:)

Or, you put yourself between two beautiful women named Pat and Tina, and you ARE the sandwich! :D:thumbup::cool::cool::cool:

See now only drummers and musicians come up with stuff like that!
Brian I was one of the Disneyland drummers for the past 6 years and let me tell you that is where you go to hear the worst dirtiest jokes in the world. From the musicians.

A tater will work really well I've find. I didn't get my patina intentionally it just came with time, but man did those taters help!

I have had it happen with onions and potatos. First time I cleaned off the patina. I just leave it on now.

Make sure you degrease before you try these applications. I have had some nice fingerprints show up using vinegar. I did a machete once by tightly wrapping the blade in jute twine, pouring on the vinegar, and letting it sit overnight. It made a really cool "Jute Damascus" pattern. The last one I did in vinegar was an axe head and it turned out awesome. Mac

i put yellow mustard on both sides of this knife and let it dry. after it was dry i submerged it in vinegar and after 15 minutes i flipped the blade over to get the bubbles off it. after another 15 minutes i took my finger and rubbed only the "loose mustard" off and let it soak another 15 to remove the remaining mustard. http://mysite.verizon.net/ress6fq6/id31.html

Bear,

I have a photo of that effect on the other computer but it isn't conecting at the moment. Yes, the twine soaks up the vinegar but leaves an air space between the strings and many different points of contact in the spiral pattern of the jute. Mac

This is what I do on my hawks-Heat the blade slightly, blue,go over with steel wool. Then heat again and go over with bleach, use a piece of towel and dab it on not rub then steel wool again.this gives a greenish brown patina, looks nice-----Butch
