I asked Ray Laconico to make one of his Backpacker knives for me and I promised I'd post a photo once I got it. So here it is.
I spec'd. a bit longer blade than he usually makes for this model and also wanted it 1/8" thick. He made it in O1 and it came out EXACTLY like I wanted it. It's a perfect user, and one of the best looking knives I've ever seen. I just love clean lines and smooth contours.
This is what happens when an artist who loves the outdoors makes a knife. It is the perfect balance of form and function. The blade is 4.25" and the handle is 4.5". The convex edge is razor sharp. Radiused rectangular cross section handles are my favorite. This one is paper micarta and tapers toward the full guard. I like guards on all my outdoor knives.
It's super light. I'm not sure if the tang has been lightened, but it's way lighter than my Busse Basic 5 and my buddy's Extreme Ratio Shrapnel. Mainly a function of thinner material.
The Kydex sheath is awesome. Ray's Kydex skills are as good as his knife making / designing. It is clear he is a perfectionist.
Keep an eye out for his For Sale listings. I have yet to see one of his knives I don't like.:)
Thanks Ray!

Great knife man!! I got a bowie from Ray yesterday. Laconicos in the air!!!

Great pic!! Looks awesome!!

Before I had Ray make the EDC knife I posted above I had him make really large version of his little Backpacker. This thing is a Brute. 1/4" 5160 with a 5.75" blade and about a 5" handle.

Wow. Nice stuff Brian.
I grew up in Detroit and still live within the smell of Detroit. That's not the kind of rifle one sees around the city. Sure you wouldn't feel more at home with a buggered up SKS? :D:p

If you don't mind me asking... what did it set you back. Very nice looking blade. I bet it's functional as crap.

:D Regarding the buggered SKS; photographing such a fine knife with communist designed hardware would be tantamount to burning the American Flag!
I grew up near the Rouge bridge... steel plants, chemical plants and oil refineries - talk about smell! :barf:

Hey those are two different knives! I thought they were the same at first. I forgot about that big one. Thanks for posting the pics!

Great knives! I got my first Laconico the other day and his sheaths are great as well.

Good stuff! When I drop by Ray's place I get to handle whatever he has on hand. A few weeks ago he had five finished knives of various design. Every one of them was top quality. I only have two so far, but I have plans for more.

Those are awesome! Congrats on your new Laconicos. You take great pics!

Here is their forefather, the first Light Weight Hiker:
