This custom Bowie was hand forged by the now famous knife maker Raymond Richard who's family is well steeped in the traditional Cutlery business.. Starting with Ray's great Granddad, Stephen Richard in 1865 with Richard Cutlery in Southbridge, Mass..

These days Raymond Richard hand hammers all his Tomahawks and traditional Knives and fashions them with hard to find vintage Stag, Wood, Bone, Steel, Iron and more, in the traditional style as was done from the days of when this country(USA) was young, tough, industrious and self sufficient..

This Bowie was made from high carbon steel from something called shear steel as I recall. Ray forged this Bowie knife blade from an old lumber mill saw blade Circa 19th century. Shear steel has not been produced in over 100 years. The hand hammered S double guard, pommel and keeper ring is vintage iron. The handle is made from the shin bone of an Oregon Deer. I recall Ray telling several of us on an old thread that he devised a recipe of polyurethane and a vacuum process of some kind after cleaning the bone and other stabilizing procedures on this Deer Leg Bone to bring out the ultra fine grain and color.(SEE PHOTOS) This handle material is quite rare!. To my knowledge he only produced 4-5 knives with this Oregon Deer Leg bone..

-- This Bowie knife blade is just shy of 4 1/4 inches knife tip to bottom of the tang. Overall length is 8 3/8 inches.

Anthony, is the blade finish same as when you received it ? (i.e. "antique" look or oxidation ?).
and, is it shaving sharp and would it make a great user ?
thanks, roland

Hello Roland,

Please forgive my delay. I just saw this post!.

Yes, it is as new and the century+ old vintage shear steel's appearance as it is shown is how it was the date of purchase. It would make a fine user. In fact, that is why I initially purchased the knife was to use. I just could never bring myself to it.

Email me for further details if you like.
