I've been a little hesitant to start this thread, because I know that it will likely drag on forever:rolleyes:

But, I need to give kudos to Ray for sending me this blank, it was a very thoughtful gift and I hope to make him proud through my efforts in turning it into a complete knife.

Thank you very much, Ray!

So, here's the first of what probably will be many pictures. I'm still undecided on what to do about the handle, but I will start first in getting everything square and get my centerlines scribed in order to find out where the edge will be.

Don't hold your breath on this thread. I will try to make it enjoyable for you though:)

How come the center looks off center?

this blank I believe was in Ray's box o blanks, and that is probably the reason. This is something that I've already started to figure out how to fix, if you look at my preliminary drawing there you'll see how I might go about it. Gonna be a lot of filing in my future.

I'm thinking that for this knife I will use some 1/8" stock of some kind of material for a double guard, and a steel ferrule.

Lorien,

Sounds like fun and props to Ray for hooking you up ! :thumbup:
Looking forward to this. :)

after a very lame Monday, I awoke today with some inspiration!
Ray has given me some very simple and useful advice, and I think I'm about ready to get started.

Some times it takes a bit of time to formulate a game plan. It's actually a little harder when you show up half way through the game, (ie; the blade is already made) than it is starting from the beginning. But I have a strategy and the materials to jump in:thumbup:

Like he said brother, Have fun. when I feel stuck on a project, I find it's better to put it aside and let my brain simmer on it for a bit. Comes out better that way, like a good stew. (Or maybe my brain is mushy? ;) )

stewed brains! That's awesome. :D:thumbup:

the first task will be to file away at the tang until it fulfills my fastidiousness:).

The only filing that I will be doing to this knife will be the tang mod pictured above, and the edge bevels. Ray's forging is amazingly accurate-even if the tang isn't exactly centered, the centerline of the primary bevels is super accurate.

So I've gotten started here by making up a ghetto jig so I could square up the ends of the purpleheart I'll be using for the handle material;

the fine teeth on this saw make for a tedious cut, but leaves a nicely polished and, (hopefully) flat and true surface.

Nice looking wood, eh? One of my employees brought this piece in from his shop class for me. Very thoughtful guy, he's one the lookout for walnut right now. There is a lot of waste in these classes, and I hope to impart some of my scavenging wisdom on to the younger generation:).

I was going to use an aluminum suspension linkage from a mountain bike to make a guard for this knife, but I'm really liking the ferrule style system. It's really light weight, and is relatively simple and easy for a hack like me to put together.

There will hopefully be more to report soon(ish).

thought you'd like it:D

the materials;

the ferrule is titanium and was harvested from a high end bicycle seat post which I destroyed many years ago in a horrendous crash:)
