Razor Edge Angle Guide?

Has or does anyone use the Razor Edge clamp-on angle guide to sharpen with? How well does it work? I want to try using stones and need some kind of angle guide to help me get the feel of the proper angle. Can anyone recommend an alternative to this model? It's the only thing like this that I've been able to find on the market. Thanks.

That ought to tell you something, right there. If it's anything like the old Buck clamp (I think it was called the Edgemaster or something like that) I suggest you save your money. I've still got mine laying around here somewhere, never did get it to work well enough to be worth the trouble.

Wow! Isn't there any alternative to it on the market? I just need something to help get the feel for the correct angle on a stone. I know the high-end systems work great, but I just don't want to mess with all that. Is the only answer to "hit and hope" on a stone freehand?

Pretty sure you can use the DMT Aligner clamp with a regular benchstone. That ought to help you get the movements down pretty well. Really though if you have decent hand dexterity, hand sharpening without a jig isn't that hard. If you were local I bet I could have you well on your way in half an hour or less. Look for KnifeKnut in the maintenance tinkering and embellishment section, he has some good training basics in one of his sig links.

Edited to add: here's a link to one of those how-to posts:

And also, his name is knifenut1013, actually, oops!

Thanks, anything helps at this point. I'm actually a pretty good athlete, never tried a sport that I wasn't at least decent at, especially hand-eye coordination stuff like boxing and tennis, but I just can't seem to hold a consistent angle freehand. I thought if I had a guide of some kind for a while it would imprint on my memory.

Well, one thing that helped me when first learning was to set my thumb along the spine while sharpening and use it as sort of a height gage. Using the thumb pressed against the spine, while sharpening your thumb should just rub the stone lightly while sharpening the flat part of the blade, then lift to follow the curve of the blade. I'm pretty sure if you read all the pages of that thread I linked to, the various contributors in there describe the process pretty well.
