First I'd like to thank pahl for sponsoring the Razor Edge video pass around. The sharing of information is what makes the internet so great. Forums like this take basic information sharing even further and help create a culture or online community. What a wonderful thing.
As to the video. Oh My...
The presentation is not what you would call ,"overly technical". I was kind of expecting some of the "microscopic photos of an actual edge" referred to in the video. They say you can see this type of info in the "advanced" video. After viewing this video, I'm not sure I'd spring for the "advanced version".
That said, I have to get me one of those stylish "Razor Edge" patches for my shirt! How I envy joe!
Just kidding.
For a total newbie who has no understanding of edge geometry, this video might be useful. For anyone who has a reasonable understanding of what makes up a cutting edge, I can't see much knowledge to be gained here. To be perfectly honest, I sort of felt like I was watching a Saturday Night Live segment on sharpening a knife. Sometimes it seemed like Joe really didn't like the knife he was sharpening!
After watching the use of the Razor Edge guide, i can honestly say that it doesn't seem much more reliable than freehand sharpening (unless you have a palsy) the way it's sort of arbitrarily mounted on the blade. Real repeatability seems unlikely.
I'm sure that the people who produced the video did so with the best of intentions and I'm probably being overly harsh, especially after keeping the tape for two extra weeks on a pass around.
To me, the Spyderco Sharpmaker video was somewhat more informative.
I'm including $2.00 US cash with the video as a late fee and to help compensate pahl for his generosity in this pass around.
Thanks guys.

PS: poboy, it's on it's way to you.
PPS: Does that fish on the wall do Elvis?
