RC-4 or BRKT aurora

Both are quality knives from quality companies and equal in fit an finish as far as I'm concerned.

If you want specific and refined, get the aurora.
If you want bombproof and sharp get the rat.

Of course, what you really should do is get both.

I am trying to decide on a good bushcraft/survival knife system. both have great sheaths with room for a firesteel and both are from reputable manufacturers. darn near the same price point as well.

i personally am leaning towards the RAT simply because i don't own a brkt and i have 2 of the ontario rats with a RAT izula on the way. also i believe the BRKTs have a convex edge which requires alot more to sharpen and certainly more than a diamond hone which i throw in my BOB.

any weigh in from the people here who know far more than me?

convex grinds are EASIER to maintain. there isn't any bevel. all you need is a Sharpie and your belt.
hell you can even strop them on a piece of cardboard.

and if you already have RATs, then for the love of steel, GET A BARK RIVER. they are fantastic knives!

Two completely different styles of knife. Apples and oranges.

I have an RC-4 and I also have a Fox river. My RAT is my favorite user fixed blade. I've found it to be good at everything I've needed it to do. I'll soon be adding an RC-6 because I'm so happy with the 4.

The Fox river is still sitting unused in my dresser. Partly because BRK&T refuses to send me a sheath for it, and partly because it just never really grew on me. Beautiful knife, I just like my RAT's better.

As far as the convex edge, they're easy to keep up with, just different, don't let it worry you.

As far as the fit and finish, I have to say of the examples I've seen, I think RATs are a bit better. But their not hand finished like the Barkies.

In the end, it comes down to personal taste.

send me the Fox River! :p

As others have stated, the Bravo-1 is really more like the RC-4 then the Aurora.

Personally it think the Aurora is great all around field tool,

...I like the longer blade and the thinner steel, the contoured handle makes it extremely comfortable in extended use.

For a heavier bullet proof field tool, both the RC-4 and Bravo-1 are up to the task.

The RC-4 is obviously cheaper.

The Bravo-1 offers many features that make it superior.

The fully contoured handle on the B-1 feels better in hand then the slab sided RC-4.

The uncoated, fully convexed, A2 blade on the B-1 offers more efficient cutting ability over the coated, thick edged, RC-4.

When it come to sheaths there are now at least four available sheaths for the Bravo;

leather with retaining strap, leather pouch, leather horizontal carry, and of course the original multi-position Kydex sheath.

The RC-4 is a fine trust worthy field tool, but the Bravo-1 is a cut above.

Just one knife users opinion.

You won't feel nearly as bad wailing on the RAT. ;)

I beat mercilessly on my Bark River knives knowing if I break them they will be repaired or replaced and if they start looking beat-up a trip back to the shop and $12 in shipping and handling will get them back in like new condition.

There are no other knifes I feel so confidant about when it comes to hard use.

I dunno, I beat the hell out of my Aurora and I'm still waiting to see any signs of the abuse I put it through. Some small patina spots is all I've gotten so far. I don't feel bad about beating it at all. It's almost insulted if I don't.

I must confess that I never sent a knife back to Bark River for repair work or refurbishing.

Derrick did send one I ordered back to fix a loose handle scale, but that was before I received it.

I have sent a few in for custom sheath work, and they did come back re-polished and re-sharpened.

But it’s nice to know I can if need be.
