RC-5 and a lil fun

The more I use this knife the more I really like it. I had it strapped to my pack today as I was running around in the woods. As I walked through the woods I spotted a down tree, and a thought popped into my head.

How about making a shelter... Now I have seen dozens of trees in this position before and always new it good for a quick lean to, but never felt the need to make one before. Must have been my new Survival knife willing me to do it;)

I didn't have much time, but if I were really going to use this lean to I would double the amount of leaves and debris on the back side. I did take care to build the back into the wind which was blowing about 15 mph out of the NW.

With the lean to built it was off to gather firewood. I did a lil chopping with the RC-5 and it worked really well, but I always carry my folding saw with me, and opted to section the wood with that. The oak was pretty thick and damp, so batonning was on the menu for the RC-5!

Thr RC-5 really excelled here. It would only takes a couple of smacks with the baton to force the wood apart. I really had a blast with it.

More to come

I set up my MPI space blanket in the back of my lean to, to help keep me dry and also keep me warm. I cleared some large rocks that were at the base of the lean to and built a reflective fire ring to concentrate the heat towards the shelter. This is it all set up and ready for the night. I hate called weather camping, but with more leaves and debris on the shelter and maybe another couple of inches of hemlock bows as bedding this shelter would have worked well IMO.

Thanks for looking:thumbup:

Nice post. I like how you made your sling with 550 and wrapped it. Did you do that yourself? If so, can you point me in the direction of how it is done?

Thanks, yeah I made the sling myself. It is a simple knot. Let me see if I can find a link somewhere for you.

Great pictures and good photo documentation, I feel like I was there.
It looks like you have some nice country where you live.
Thanks for posting.:)

I just noticed that your your knifes bow drill divot looks burned, maybe make the top of the fire drill more pointed and rub a little chapstick or hand salve in there to reduce friction. I made a fire bow/drill setup and started a fire using my knife for the top handle and it didn't get burned at all, I used Badger Balm.
Thanks again for posting the great photos.

Good job Tony. Yer makin me jealous cause my RC5 is still in the mail. I'll be havin fun soon though.

Great thread Tony! Man, I hate seeing all these RC-5 threads of late. I really want one, but actually what I really want is the eagle sheath. I love my RC6 and already having an RC4....I don't know, just having a hard time rationalizing. Dang, though, those sheaths are so sweet. If RAT ever did offer that eagle RC-6, I'd jump on it in a heart beat.

Thanks for the tip on badger balm. I had the drill nice and pointed but had trouble getting a hold on it so I adjusted that. The micarta did burn a lil, but it is mostly just discoloration from the wood. Besides I like character on my users. I have a bunch of different sockets for the bow drill that I use, I just wanted to see how the RC-5 handled it.....

I replied to the one in WS&S, but, that is a sweet set up! RC 5 shows it can perform pretty good for its size.

Awesome picturs brutha. Man I can't wait to get one. I am going to seriously beat the crap out of that thing.

Dude, now that's what I'm talking about! Great post of putting the knife to use in a real environment. Email me your mailing address (jeff@ratcutlery.com) and we will send you a free Izula just because we think this is such a good post of the RC-5 in use. Put your Izula color preference in the email.

Wow, once again the R.A.T. guys cease to amaze me for their outstanding customer service!

Dude, that's not customer service, that's an appreciation for using a knife for what it was designed to do. The post impressed me because it took a lot of work to do all that was shown in the post. This was more than just chopping a stick in two;)

DAMN:eek:

Thanks a bunch Jeff, that is mighty generous of you:):):)

Email inbound:thumbup:

tony, how do u like that gamo air rifle? is it a whisper model?

Yup thats a Gamo Whisper .177 cal

The triiger it came with has alot of play. I replaced the trigger with a GRT-III
trigger. Now its hair:thumbup:

With heavy lead lead pellets the rifle is very accurate and quiet. With the PBA pellets it's louder than some 22 rifles and not accurate at all.

Over all I like the rifle alot. it takes small game like squirrels in 1 clean shot:thumbup:
