First I want to thank Shotgunner11 for setting this up. Next I'd like to thank Derrick from KnivesShipFree for putting up the knife.
Well, my first impression was that the RC5 is a very large knife. I've never had a knife with serrations, but I'd already made up my mind that I didn't like them. I wouldn't know how to sharpen them, they would make cutting most things a hassle, etc. I know a lot of people have/had the same thoughts I did.
My 11 year old was pretty impressed with it. It was pretty nice that I got to take it out for the long Memorial weekend. My first task was to do a little splitting of some wood for the evening camp fire. I honestly think this thing works better than most hatchets I've used. Since I didn't want to ding it up, the next night I was using the hatchet. The rest of the family members were commenting on how it looked easier using the RC5. I had to agree.
The next task also had to do with shaving some wood for getting a fire started. It worked very well, and although it doesn't make as good of fuzz sticks as my custom scandi grind, it did well enough.
The rest of the tasks were mainly normal camp stuff. Cutting some rope, a little food prep, etc.
I honestly don't know if I've changed my mind on serrations, but I really wouldn't hesitate to order this knife with serrations. They didn't bother me with any of the tasks I set before it. The more I handled the RC5, the more it grew on me. The size which seemed a bit big in the beginning was very comfortable after handling it for just a few minutes. It's balanced very nicely, and you can tell that RAT put a lot of thought into this knife.
The sheath is awesome. I like how it seems to be very versatile, You could attach it to your pack, or attach it to your belt. Either way, it would be an easy carry. Especially for a larger knife.
Well, that's about it for the review. I'll get this in the mail for TBlock1 tomorrow.
