RC-5 vs BK-2

BTW, this comparison would make a killer magazine article.
+1.

Looking at my current collection, the RAT knife that would make the most sense for me to acquire would be the RC-4. Between my BK-2 and my Swamp Rat RatManDu, I'm in pretty good shape when it comes to 5" knives. But I'm a little light in the 4" category.

You can't go wrong with any RAT knife in my humble opinion. The quality of materials and craftsmanship is as stated "top knotch" -But I can promise you that you will LOVE an RC-4. It's just THE all around knife -to me anyway. Not too big to be cumbersome, and not too small to be afraid to tackle almost any task. When you hold it, you feel like you were born with it in your hand.

I'm sorry, I'm getting emotional again... It's my favorite. (reserved statement until my RC-5 arrives!)

As the man said: Any good knife is like a beautiful woman. Sure they're both nice to look at and fun to play with, but a good knife won't complain about you spending too much time in the woods.

Whichever you decide to choose for your next blade-fix, as long as you get out and get it dirty as it was meant to be. It's all good.

Enjoy.

Like many here, I love my RC knives and my Beckers too. And while some feel you are being disrespectful posting this here, I don't. Nothing wrong with an open and honest accessment of why people are willing to pay more for one brand over another. (IMHO).

They are both excellent knives, the BK-2 and the RC's. I don't have an RC-5 yet, but I hope to someday. I can say, at least from my other RCs, and from my Beckers, that the main difference is (to me) is the company making the product, and that while the BK-2 is a great knife, there is nothing elegant about it. It is a brute, beater, throw anything at it, and it will take it with a smile workhorse. But there are times when you need to do more.... delicate (?) work and the BK is a bit heavy handed for that. Just an opinion, but it is mine, and I am sticking to it :)

You really can't go wrong buying either, and as Jeff has said, anything Ethan Becker has his name on, is GOING to be a quality product. It might be a better question to ask is which is going to get the job done for you? Or be smart and buy both :) :)

Jake is right, this WOULD make a great magazine article. :)

Was going to tell you to get both and deside for your self, but since you got the Becker BK2 first.... Congrats! Now you just need to save up for the RC5.

BTW I have no problem with the plastic handle slabs on the Beckers. They fit my hand well and since they are smooth I don't get blisters while using them with out gloves. Am planning on getting an RC6 when I have the cash and if the Micarta slabs are to rough for me I'll make some wood slabs for it.

I haven't read this whole thread but I will say this, I will gladly put my personal safety in the hands of a Becker knife. There is no one in this industry that has more integrity and honesty about themselves than Mr. Ethan Becker. I'm also proud to call the man a close friend. RAT Cutlery is proud to miss a sale on a knife if that sale goes to Becker. Seriously. We like to support honesty, integrity and quality....and we always will.

I own a RC5 & Camillus & Ka-bar BK2's and both knives are worthy of owning.... The slight cost difference you speak of could easily be justified in the RC5 has micarta scales and a Eagle brand sheath....

Thanks. I will say that the compliment you've extended to Ethan Becker and his products has been said about you and your products from many of your peers. You're certainly a class act! :)

As a new dealer for RAT Cutlery, this speaks volumes to me.

Your honesty, integrity & ethics are appreciated by your dealers and customers as well!

I own both the BK2 and the RC-5. They are both outstanding. One thing I haven't seen pointed out in this thread yet is the coating on the RC-5, IMHO it is far superior. The feel in your hand is more comfortable with the RC-5 and the balance is spot on with the RC-5. I would not hesitate to take either one in the bush. I simply prefer my RC-5 now that I have the option.

IMO both knives are worth their prices and the only factor worth considering is the handle feel. If you can handle both you'll be able to determine your preference.

I'm a big fan of both companies, and would trust myself to either products.
My kit for the woods these days often consists with an RC-4 paired with a BK-9, and both have served me well. I do see where the RAT edges out the Becker though, with the more robust coating, the excellent micarta handles, and that great sheath, all there from the get go.
I find the products nicely complimentary, though I wouldn't hesitate for a moment to spend that extra money on the RAT, I mean, this is a tool you're going to have for a long time, whats a few bucks in the long run?

I was a Beckerhead before I was a RATahlioc I have bolth BK2 & RC-5 love them bolth,
I've griped on the becker fourm that kabar has sloppy QC and MR beckers knives deserves better QC the two BK9s and the BK2 I have from kabar all have rough lines small pits and un even coating functionly there fine just no love put into them,

This is why I buy and recommend these knives to everyone. Absolute class...
