RC-6 vs RAT-7 1095 vs RAT-7 D2

The other advantage the RC6 has over the RAT-7 is the point on the RAT-7 comes to a 90 degree angle and is too blunt to shove through a sheet of typing paper. The RC6 tapers to a nice point.

Also, the sheath on the RC6 is far, far better.

The RAT-7 doesn't all of a sudden suck, it has the same weaknesses it always had. The RC6 is just executed better and is worth the extra $$.

1095 vs D2: D2 is nice on short blades (wouldn't go over 4" with it), but it's not too good on big knives, and I've noticed a much higher failure rate on D2 RAT-7s over the years versus 1095.

As for me, politics do matter. With RAT Cutlery you pay fair market value for a excellent product and an excellent warranty. You also support a small American business that treats respect, honor and integrity as seriously as it's product's quality.

In short, you get the best of both worlds.

I've read some very interesting opinions that are well supported

First of all the decision is made to go ahead with a 1095 blade.

Then I just spotted that the RAT-7 is just 0.25" longer than the RC-6 so that makes no leverage differences between the knives.

I crunched up the numbers :

a 1095 RAT-7 at chesnut ridge knife shop is 85.99$ + 31.99$ for a kydex Sheath (there nylon sheath is worthless to me) + 25$ shipping for Canada = 142.98$ + customs

a RC 6 Plain Edge from KSF is 136.23$ + 5$ shipping for Canada = 141.23$ + customs

For 1.75$ I say its the same price for a 6-7" Outdoor plain edge Drop Point in 1095 steel with a usable knife sheath.

I have confidence in RAT Cutlery and I had a bad experience with Ontario's Pilot Survival Knife (went to the trash I was ashamed to even give it to someone, the tip broke, the handle came apart the steel is $#!!) Since then I had a Gerber LMFII which is great for a survival knife, a lot of good experiences with it still going strong but I need something bigger without getting a machete so I turned to something in the knid of a RAT-7.

I hear of the great fit and finish on RATs blades and of a good customer service. I need to trust my blade in the bush I do care for all my knives because they take care of me.

So I'm giving it a night thinking before jumping into the RATs.

Thank ya all for those answers they sure help.

KSF might see a Canadian ordered RC-6 soon enough ;)

I have no doubt, you won't be disappointed. Let us know what you think after you have it in hand.

I'll also throw my hat in the ring for RAT Cutlery. The warranty is unbeatable. They actually give a shit about the people who use the tools they make, and that is refreshing to me.

I like the fact that not one, NOT ONE of you, has made fun of me because I don't own a RAT knife...yet.

Working on it.

Dude, we don't care if you ever own a RAT knife, we're just glad to have you here on the forums and get your input. As I have said many times, the whole philosophy of RAT is not about how many sales we make, it IS about the people who actually use gear and understand that there's a lot of BS floating around when it comes to survival, gear, tools that work, etc. So, in other words, if you're carrying a knife you like and it's worked well for you, then no need to spend $$ on something new. That in itself makes you as much a part of the RAT cult as anything else. ;)

i like when you say that there is a load of BS floating when it comes to survival gear, I have to say same goes with the medical kits. I've got a hell of a time when putting up survival packs and medical packs for bush flying, It is hard to find none cheap items that are reliable. Here in Canada I once found a hollow handle rambow knife that a pilot bought for bush flying in a military surplus, that thing is just a big ass butter spreader filled with a lot of nothing.Back when I lived in Africa it was easier to find a good knife and quality medical items, for the knife nobody bought cheap china made stuff they bought knives that worked, for the medical stuff just had to go the the hospital and by things directly from them. Now I find myself doing all of the stores to find quality first aid kit items to choose from the 100 different band aid brands. I don't buy stuff because they are cool or expensive I buy them because they work, thats it thats all.

We are for sure a consumer economy here in the states. Alot of people out there taking advantage of peoples lack of knowlege.

That's another thing I like about RAT. I know Jeff and Mike have used and abused enough gear to know what works and what doesn't.

Too much gear is designed by people who rarely leave the confines of a desk. Alot of ideas look really great on paper but just don't fly in practice.

Guys I know that it is obvious I'll get an "RC-6 ALL THE WAY" answer in this forum, but give me something to justify this please.

Why the RC-6 is superior why should I buy it over anyother one ???

Okey dokey...here we go:

1.) Because the RAT 7 is a ripped off design by a mediocre company.
2.) Because the RC is the real deal, designed by men who practice what they preach and manufactured by a company with a stellar performance record.

3.) One word: "Warranty."

Does that help?

Thats a way to condense all of what I heard, yes it helps :)

The RAT-7 is our design and produced by Ontario. We simply have some intellectual property disputes with Ontario that are making their way through the courts.

Let's not get into a knife company bashing thread. Again, the courts will decide what belongs to who ;)

And we do sincerely appreciate the business and support!

Sweet, I guess that by default, that makes me a "prefered buyer".;)

Me Too???:o I've got all three of my RCs from Derrick. Just got my RC-4 and Izula from them today but haven't opened the package yet...gotta wait for my wife to fall asleep so she doesn't test them out on me! I'm like a kid at Christmas, I'm staring at this package discreetly and can't open it! LOL

Watchout keeping secrets from your wife is a backstabber (no pun intended :) )
