I have a large knife/shortsword (Hoping it comes out looking more like a shortsword than a large knife.) I'm making out of 1/4" 1075, and will have to send it off for heat treating (Forge too shallow). What Rc should I request for it?

Thanks,

For a sword, go lower. The lateral stresses that a sword encounters will break a harder blade. Something in the Rc 54-56 range is fine. Many swords are much lower.

I wasn't sure. It's only the one knife. I can heat treat any blade smaller than 8 or so inches just fine, myself. I was actually thinking to myself just now that I might try out my new coal forge... But then I think I can't afford to mess this one up. (Literally can't afford. I'm a college student trying to survive Christmas and an early spring wedding )

edit- also, I re-drew it a little bit and did manage to make it more like a sword and less like a knife. It's going to be something for my wedding. My soon to be wife wants a handfasting, and I wanted an excuse to make a short sword.

Hmm, I might be able to help. I could HT your blade, and if anything goes wonky I will supply a replacement bar of equal or better size, how's that sound? Shoot me an email if you would be interested we can iron out the specifics.
