RC3 MIL serrations or not?

I think you will get more use out of a plain edge versus serrated blade, just because you can do more with it. It's been mentioned before but get a box cutter for cutting open boxes.

To add on to my earlier post I would personally encourage you to get a plain and learn to put microserrations on your blade with a coarse stone if you think it will aid in your cutting tasks as microserrations are much more multipurpose then traditional milled serrations.

Hi guys. Im tossed up between getting the serrated version or the plain edge. I use my folder at work but i dont feel confident with it anymore. I would rather have a fixed blade. My folder is partly serrated and i use it to cut cardboard, hard plastic straps and plastic wrapping, rope etc. The serrations on my folder "saw" through the cardboard where the plain edge portion doesnt do as well. I guess im looking for some opinions on which i should get. I like the look of the plain edge better but if the serrations will server me better, then maybe thats an option. What do you think?

Also be aware that the serrations on an ESEE/RAT Cutlery knife are altogether different than on other knives and you sharpen that area of the blade just the same as the plain edge part.

I also prefer a plain edge for what I USE THE KNIFE FOR MOST OF THE TIME but there are occasions & uses where the serrated portion of the blade can be quite beneficial.

I echo what Dale stated above, again if you can-buy them both.

Dale received countless phone calls from me with this same question and after describing what I would be using the knife for the most it was then easier to make my choice-which was the Plain Blade and if conditions or my type of tasks change then I have the option to switch blades.

Thanks again Dale for all your help.

A sharp plain edge is my personal favorite. I gave all my serrated knives to my buddies. Never had a serrated RAT/ESEE though.

I just ordered a serrated RC-3MIL. I have a plain edge RC-3 which and I've never had a problem cutting anything with it. Since I don't have a single serrated knife and I really wanted the MIL, I figure I'd give the serrations a try.

I see serrations on a combo edge like 4 wheel drive on a jeep. When ever you get stuck in a mud pit while off roading you use your 4 wheel drive to get you out. The same applies to a combo edge when ever your plain edge portion gets dull and won't cut anymore, on the field for example, and you don't have any sharpening tools. Then you use the serrations as your 4 wheel drive.

It never hurts to have a back up edge.

yeah, but who leaves home without at least a small diamond stone in a pocket?
