RC3 or RC4

I saw a thread a while back that asked if he should get either an RC4 or RC3 but he already had a large knife to deal with chopping.

I on the other-hand don't have either a good big or small knife so which of the RC3 or RC4 makes for a better do-it-all knife? While I'm not looking for a zombie killer or chopping down entire trees, I do need a single knife that will handle most camping chores so I dont need to carry an arsenal of knives for specific tasks.

So...if you had the choice between JUST a RC3 and RC4, which would you choose and WHY!?

I'd go for the RC4, because its not big enough to be cumbersome for smaller tasks, but the added blade length makes it better for battoning. All in all, i think either is a good choice though.

RC4 is an incredible all-around knife. If you are going to only get one that is the route to go. IMO The RC3 is best paired with a larger knife as part of a combo.

If you're looking for the perfect outdoor knife, RC4 is it.

Don't get me wrong, RC3 is great. But RC4 (imo) is better for camping.

RC4, PE. If you're looking for a possibly better all-arounder, maybe wait for the RC-5 SERE release. That should be seweet!

+1 on that. The RC-3 at 1/8" is to thin for an all around camp knife. It's great for feather sticks/traps and such but the RC-4 at 3/16" IMHO would make a better all around. Now the RC-5 when released will be and awsome blade, at last we will finally pry and dig and start fires and baton etc. etc. all in the comfort of 1/4" STEEL!!! whoo hoooo.

Any idea of when the RC-5 will be released and how much? What is SERE?

Looks like you've made this a pretty damn easy decision for me, not a single person vouched for the RC3. I wish all my important life decisions were like this lol

SERE stands for Survival Evasion Resistance Escape. The knife deign for the RC-5 SERE is based on what a group of military SERE instructors want in a knife. The SERE is going to be thick and not have the cutting efficiency as an RC-4, so keep that in mind.

As for the choices... most of the guys on here are outdoor types so they like the 4 better than the 3. The tactical guys like the 3 better than the 4

There use to be a picture on the RAT site of the RC3-RC6 together but I could not find it...maybe Jeff has it filed away somewhere....it was all 3 RC's with a Zippo lighter in picture..I think or maybe a law enforcement badge...?

I think there is an optical illusion in that picture though. The handles on the RC3 and 4 are identical in size, although the picture makes them look different.

That's one of the reasons I like the RC4 better; there is better balance between the handle size and the blade length. Its also why, despite the lesser fit and finish, I still really like the RAT3; excelllent balance between handle length and blade length.
