Man have I been lucky on this forum just lately !

My latest good luck is recieving a brand new Rat knives RC4 to borrow and test for a couple of months !!!!
This is all thanks to fellow member KGD who won the knife in a contest held by the RAT knives group and offered it to me for being a fellow Canuck !!!!

Anyways first impressions are that this is a great looking knife, the fit and finish are awesome and the factory edge shaves hair with ease !

After making another bald patch on my arm I tried the knife at cutting a post-it......

I then tried making a fuzz stick, this was kinda strange as one minute the knife cut the wood like butter but the next it kinda skidded off as if it didn't want to bite into the wood ? Not too shabby though, better than most of my other blades !

Here it is compared with a knife of similar size, my Swamprat Bandicoot, which is my most carried knife at the moment and I also included Pit Jr's Ontario TAK so you can get an idea of the size.....

Anyway KGD told me not to baby the knife so although I won't abuse it as Nos does I will use it as I do my other blades and include such tasks as notching wood and battoning !
I am going away shortly but will post a future review as soon as time permits !!!!;)

Wow. Thanks for the pic with the TAK! It really looks like the RC-4 is everything I hoped the TAK would be. I didn't care for the TAK I had at all.

Enjoy it Pitdog - and nice pictures. I like the pumpkin shot. Oh and the comparison with the TAK is useful.

You might try giving it a quick strop, sounds like there may have been a wire edge left over from the factory sharpening that bent over causing the problem on the fuzz stick.

I'm curious as to where the knife balances. I had a Tak and it was handle heavy, other than that, it was a good knife. Also, do you feel the handle is on the small side? The Tak has a nice handle IMO.

Balance is on the handle, just aft the the final bolt and the finger notch.

It is not handle heavy -- I'd call it neutral, which is good for bush work.

I have medium hands and find the handle adequate in terms of length, even though I usually like a longer handle.

Really, the RC-4 is a solid package for an excellent price. I'm thrilled with mine and confidently predict PitDog will like it.

Frankly, the entire R.A.T. line is outstanding.

Hey kgd, the handle on the RC-4 is the same size as the RC-3?
Doc

Yeah doc - exact same size. The only difference is the thickness due to the 3/16" blade rather than 1/8" on the RC-3. You can feel the thickness difference when handling the two though.
