So which of the two choices are you going after and why? I am not sure of what I want so I thought it would be nice to get a discussion going, especially for those like me who have never handled a RAT fixed blade of any kind. Right now I am leaning toward a RC6 as I have the Model1 folder and am a bit of a chopper guy so I think that a longer blade would suit me better. But the cheapskate in me likes the cheaper option.

What are your thoughts, and nobody is wrong I just want to see the thought processes for deciding.

RC-6. I want to have a larger blade for this "survival knife" kit/psk. Many of you already know I'm more of a traditional kit kinda guy.

Hatchet, 4" "simple" sheath knife, and a SAK.

I'm warming up to, or at least willing to try out a larger knife with a small psk. Coupled with a SAK (can't go anywhere without mine) it might be perfect for day hikes, and one or two nighters.

I'll never give up on my trio of woods tools. I can however see the benefit of one large blade, psk, and a SAK. I'll be looking to the RC-6 to chop/batton for fire wood, kindling, and possible shelter. For this I'll want the larger knife.

I have all kinds of 4" fixed blades that I trust, and am very familiar with. It's the 5"+ that I'm interested in trying out.

i'm with you on this one.... i too am a more traditional styled kit kind of guy...

i would rather have the 6 in. blade.. i have a gang of 4 in. fixed blades....

I'm going to go for the RC6, but mostly because I already have an order in for an RC4 seperately. I've often taken a RAT7 and RAT3 on a trip in combo and I end up using them about equally, so I think either would be fine. But I'm of the school that if I only had one tool I'd prefer a larger one.

BTW if you haven't already chimed in on how to make the blades themselves distinctive please do so over in the Rat Cutlery forum. It would be great if they'd make these blades a little different for us.

I had asked for the 4 inch but if prices are better in quantity for the 6 inch, I would go that way too. Thanks.

Guess I might be in the minority on this one, I think I'm leaning a lot towards the RC4.

I've used several knives in the ~5.5" - 7" size class, and wasn't fond an any of them. That size (for me) doesn't do anything well. They are not long enough to be called 'choppers' (or to have any power doing it), and too long for several important tasks. Mainly, they don't feel as good in the hand when carving to me, and when I need the tip I don't have as much control over it. As far as batoning, I feel that a solid 4" can still adequately perform this task.

I'm not against big knives, I really love my Kabar bowie (9") and it may replace my beloved Fiskars hatchet. But that's a much different class altogether.

I'm still just a little on the fence about whether or not to order one of these, as I've never handled a RAT before, and I'm super picky about my handles. The ones on the RC's seem quite thin, though hopefully 'tall' enough. I suppose I can always sell it off if I get it and don't like it though! (PITA...)

I prefer the RC6 ......and I like the RC4.....I may buy one of each do to the indecision....But if limited to one I guess I would go the RC6...

Spooky....Dont get spooked...grab one ,I have a feeling you will not regret it ...the RC line-up is EXCELLENT !

I think that'd be neat, but it seems it would really drive up the price (and wait) on these things. Based on the main sticky thread, it seems that a lot of people really need this to stay at a lower price range to keep them in the game, myself included.

Haha, if we had rep points here I'd give you some for that. I'm sure I'll end up breaking down and signing up for one of these, youralls endorsements are just to emphatic for me to ignore. :D

Oh, meant to ask you earlier, have you found that the thickness is prohibitive to any fine tasks with the RATS? Looked like they might be pretty chunky. Or just a total non-issue with the full flat grind?

Well obviously I haven't used the RC-4, but I have used other flat ground blades that are 3-16" thick.

I thinned my edges out a little, but didn't have any problems. I'm with you on thinner blades, but I would bet the RC-4 will be a non issue for you.

When is about an expected price lock for this? I was going to buy an RC here soon, but I'll hold off for this it seems.
