Well I can tell you that basically units like that work by raising the platform assemblies up as close to the indenter as possible and keep your blade to be checked between the platform and the indenter, and you turn the wheel on the left side of that unit til it squeezes the piec of steel and then usually there is a secondary lever or switch that you engage to leverage the weights inside the tester and it moves forward (or downward) a slight amount and then you move the lever again usually the other way and it fully engages the indenter, and then it springs back given you a reading of the difference which is the hardness reading.
This is just based on having used similar units, but as others have mentioned linking the manual will give us more intel.
