Re-edge Presidential Bowie ???

This knife is a Custom Knife which was made for the 41st President of the USA George Bush Snr, it was never given to him because he did not get into office a second time.

Im the new owner of it and am proud of it but as a result it was not quite completed and did not receive the final edging. Could someone give me an idea how best to do this? Im prepared to have a go at it but dont want to stuff the knife.

Ive done polishing work on knives before with super fine abrasives with good results but never an edge, I think I could do it with a little help, how do knife makers re-edge??

It would propably be OK just as it is now as its only going to be a display peice but I would prefer to have a live edge on it.

Any thoughts help appreciated.
Regards Tim

If the story behind it is true (not that I have any reason to doubt it), I might would leave it as is.

now remember this is just my opinion,, if it were mine and knowing that it is a rare piece i would ask here and see if a a well experienced make would mind doing it for me, not room for any error, that way i would feel good knowing that it was done right, the last thing i would want to happen is a mistake on my part and screw it up

Yes I know it sounds like a bit a story but it is true, I really dont want stuff it up.

Bladecarver, yes it might be better to find a local skilled knifemaker if i can find one way down here. I guess I could ship it to a trustworthy knifemaker with a good reputation not sure of any in Australia if anyone can recommend one Id be interested? I took a double edged knife once to a knife shop sharpener and he wrecked the knife it came back noticably smaller Ahhhh.

Who made it? A piece with that kind of history would be well worth sending back to the original maker for tidying up.

My friend who sent it should know Ill ask him but I didnt really want to send all the way back to the USA.

If was designed as a display, you might consider leaving it that way if you feel like it might be damaged in "improving" it. I guess it's a jugement call you have to make. Cool knife BTW.

Thanks Edro it is nice like it is, You are right it was to be a display knife it was to be elaborately decorated with scenes from Operation Deserd Storm.

G'day Tim, where are youi in Oz? You pay the postage and insurance and I'll do it for you, I'm in Melbourne. You could also try logging on to the Australian knifemakers guild site to find someone closer to you. (akg.org.au)
