Well, first of all, if he's active duty, it's only a six week wait for a Randall (certain limitations apply). If that's what you/he really want, call the shop (407-855-8075) during normal business hours and I'm sure they'll be happy to work with you on this.

ive been in for 9 years U.S.Army Infantry and 4 tours i carry a timberline specwar on all . good luck finding one of thoes but i can tell you that if he gets deployed randall will put him to the front of the line for knives beside that my suggestion is to get a good quality folder i carry a Strider SMF-GG for my daily chores and it has never let me down

Yes, 6-8 weeks; only the "military"-style knives (1, 14, 15) are available and with minimal "extras," and you must be active-duty military (and be able to prove it). They'll be open at 7 a.m. EDT on Monday, call them then.

It's one of the main reasons why the wait for civilians is so long, but you can't say they don't have their priorities straight.

If not a Randall, check out Jim Behring at Treeman knives. I actually like my Treeman Knives better than my Randall's for use. He releases batches of these knives every few weeks for sale on his site. He also hand forges some beautiful knives very, very reminiscent of Bo Randall's original releases. Here is one of mine..

They also just came out with some brand new Treeman Combat knives that are more modern. My Treeman Combat knife that I got delivered here several weeks ago and took less than a month from my order to be completed..

The problem with the great combat models is that sometimes they are not in stock. I'm talking about the custom models. I think that David Mosier makes some great looking designs and there are quite a few available in ebay and elsewhere. I have never held one but they look good and have greta references. Shane Siebert makes some nice models which are also impossible to find.

I am active Navy (Seabee) with 11 yrs of service, with a tour to the sandbox, as well as numerous other deployments to other places. Since it sounds like he has the multitool and folder down, I would look at RC knives, they have a good selection of different sized knives. They can really take a beating and their customer service is top notch. The Randall and the Treeman are both awesome knives, and that is exactly why I wouldn't want to take them on a deployment. Its been my experience that really nice stuff ends up broken...or stolen...on confiscated by customs upon your return. So if your looking a knife hes gonna use I would look at the higher end factory knives than a a nice custom. I know I will be picking up the new RC5 before my next trip...which I am hoping won't be for a while.

He might also appreciate a simple pocket knife in addition to a fixed blade. Something along the lines of a simple SAK like a Pioneer or Soldier come to mind. Or Maybe even a Climber, Tinker or Mechanic.

you know, i got a rc-4 that aint doing nothing but gathering dust. hmmmm.....

Thats surprising side cutter. I have the older RAT3, yes I do find smaller fixed blades to better suit my needs, it never left my side during my entire deployment. I have multiple sheaths for it so I don't have to keep moving them around. I keep a sheath on my vest, one my drop leg, and a free one to tuck into my belt. The only dust my RAT collects is during a dust storm. The RC5 will be my largest knife, except for a CS kukri, because I want to try something larger and becuse the sheath will satisfy my need for a stand alone PSK.

well, truthfully, most of my knives collect dust. but ,then again, i got 70-80 knives.... i think...... somewhere.:D

A BK&T BK-5 would be my choice, but A Fallkniven A2 and a good SAK wouldn't be bad either.
