What's going on folks?
I have a BK11csm that I want to drop the spine a bit on, but I am curious what I would use to etch the core again?
Ferric Chloride? Muriatic acid?

I don't want to etch deeply, just darken the core.
From what I have read, I think that would cross out Muriatic acid since it etches more and darkens less, correct?

I would like to etch the core back to being similar to this since the core shows through the spine.
Thanks!

This is differential treated 01 before and after using FCL. I dabbed the acid onto a paper towel then rubbed the FCL onto the blade trying to make sure it was wet because it seems to dry quick. I don't have a lot of experience with FCL but I've done a few carbon steels this way.

The hardened area darkened up a lot. Worst case would be buffing it off if ya don't like the results
Good luck, and report back!

I have used MA with two csm's with great success. 15-20 minute soaks at a time and wash off with baking soda in between until it's as dark as you want it. Will post a pic of one of them after work so you can see how it turned out. I've never used FC though so it may be better.

Thanks guys, much appreciated.

Not very good pics but this was shortly after MA and convexing after.

It almost gave it a sort of stonewashed look. I like it. ymmv.

Since he only wants to darken the core, I still suggest FC. Muriatic would affect the whole blade.
