Re-handling an Estwing hatchet

Try contacting Estwing hachet in Rockford Il. That's where they are made my father use to work there and I have one too. I need to do the same. Good luck

Hi,

I realize this is an old thread. I'm fixing an old Estwing hammer with no leather left. Twin Leather's tw-k14 is exactly the disk I need, but their minmum order is $45. I don't need 225 disks for one hammer. Does anyone know of a source for a smaller number of these disks?

I'd say just order some leather and glue (and just cut squares), but, I could see how it wouldn't be at all difficult to get close to $45 in this project if you end up needing to buy stuff. However, you can get scrap leather for ok prices (check ebay) and a full "belly" for a good price. I have used several bellies before and while they are not the best leather on earth, for basic projects they work fine and you might have quite a bit left over I'm guessing - make yourself a sheath. Your liners/spacers could be anything - sheets of paper stacked up and slathered in glue.

Exactly. Get some leather and cut them yourself. I do and use a sharpened pipe. Then with a clip point or pen blade I cut the rectangle out of the center. For spacers I've use gasket material, linoleum tile or cut up a frisbee. Glue and shape with sand paper. A good weekend, simple tool project. DM

DM, I'm with you one this. In the link I posted above the washers were cut with rectangular slots:

I think what you describe would be more secure:

If the OP didn't want to make a punch, he could just drill the holes.

Also, IIRC the washers were not glued. I don't know how the Estwing's were made, but I think the glue is a good idea. Barge Cement is often used on leather.

Google "how it's made Estwing hatchet"

They did an episode on it and it shows most of the manufacturing process.
