Re-handling an SOG folder

Hello there,

I am relatively new to these forums (although I have lurked for a little while), and I have a slight concern. I couldn't think of a better place to ask than here. So here comes my problem:

I have recently purchased an SOG Vulcan with which I am very satisfied, overall. However, the handle is made of Zytel (and that is the problem). Don't get me wrong, I think Zytel is great for a variety of uses, especially its corrosion resistance - they say its almost indestructible, but it is not for me. This knife has become part of my EDC and I simply don't like the way Zytel feels (especially the texture on this particular knife's handle). It feels hollow and hard - kind of like cheap plastic to be honest (well I guess Zytel is not really known to be very expensive).

I have been thinking, and I should like to re-handle this knife. This however comes with a few problems: I do not have any equipment to grind and cut any other materials.** So I decided to come here and ask whether anybody does this for work, that is, could anybody craft a Micarta handle for this knife and spice it up a little bit? It would surely be easier on the eyes, and definitely better on the hand.

**To elaborate, my major problem is that the handle material wraps around the top of the steel liners, so the way it would be cut is that there is, about a 2 millimeter thick rim around the edge of the handle in which the steel liners go into. Seems like a difficult task for a man with only sand paper at hand.

Let me know,
Chrome.

Doing something like this probably doesn't make sense from a cost standpoint. You might want to post your query in the knifemaker Shop Talk forum to see if anyone there would be interested. You could also contact STR and see if he would be willing to do the work, and if so, how much he would charge.
