Re-scaling a slipjoint

I want to take some old scales off a slipjoint knife and try my hand at re-scaling it with some micarta. From what I've seen on this site, it would appear I need to replace all the pins and the pivot pin. What is the easiest way to take a slipjoint apart for rescaling?

You might want to ask Morrow_j 98. I know that he has had a few slippies rescaled with exotic materials.

Might be easiest to grind or chisel off the old handle slabs and add new ones rather than ripping the hole thing apart unless it could use a strip down.

You are correct in assuming the knife must come apart. For the pins in the scales, you can just grind them off and knock them out with a pin punch. The pins on the bolsters are a different story. You do not want to grind into the bolsters so the best way here is to drill them out. You only need to drill in about a 1/6th of an inch or so. Then knock them out with a pin punch. Just take your time and all should be fine. Replace the pins with the same material the bolsters are made of so it does not show when the knife is pinned back together again.

On the pivot pin drilling. Use a very small center punch to mark the center for your drill. Then use a center drill like the one shown here. They are very stiff and will start that hole straight without any deflection. Much less apt to try to walk around on you. Jim

I have her that you can use i single edge razor blade in between blade and liners and a hammer to sheer the pins off but i haven't tried it yet.
