Reaching equilibrium

Good thread StuntDouble.

I have found myself at this point, probably for a while now, but I've almost got to the point that I find the numbe rof knives I have as both 'distasteful' and 'wasteful'.

Slowly I am begining to remedy that fact and I have been letting them go where I can.

Someday I hope to be able to be in a similar unfettered place.

For those of you who say you want to "get there," I think it helps to really think not simply about what you "want" at the moment, but rather what you need and what you find pleasing. Think about how you use your knife, and be honest with yourself. Hint: no one actually has any need for a tanto point except a 19th century samurai who needs to stab through lacquer armor. I don't need a one-hand opener, but you might need one. Then think about what you really find pleasing. Hold and look at different handle materials. Does ivory just "speak" to you? Maybe Oak wood? Really feel the material in your hand, look at it in the light. Something will resonate with you. The same with steels. Try different ones out. You might love 1095. You might love CPM 154.

Then look for the knife that fits your needs and pleases you, that "speaks" to you. If it exists already, great. If it doesn't exist in the exact format you want, then find someone who can make it. That is your knife.

That's my problem - too many of 'em speak to me! I just have to learn to stop listening to them.

dogstar,

About the only thing I would change on the 55 is the blade shape. I wish it was a drop point rather than a clip. I guess it would be too similar to the 503 though. It does seem to be better made than the 500 series knives.

whetrock,

The 510 was actually discontinued some time ago, but as dogstar said, a little modification to the 511 will give you the same thing.

Thank you. I actually came across your other thread where you talked about that knife. Beautiful work. He currently has a Zulu for sale that I could see being my only knife, but that one is WAY out of my range right now.
It's a good price, but I don't even think my whole collection would fetch enough for me to get that one.

No, not even there. Every time I pare down, I find something else. Right now, I'm looking for my first custom Zulu pattern. I'd like to get the Case Bose wharncliff trapper but if it's 450 bucks I can't swing that. I'd also like to get a shadow pattern spear point single blade boys knife #15 that one of our dealers has, and I just saw a nice ebony single blade #73 posted on Facebook, that another dealer here has.

This is all in addition to the knives I already have on my want list, about ten, including Case Bose annuals.

To quote Rodney Dangerfield in the movie Easy Money, "I got no willpower!".

What I have done is go after quality. I have been getting either Case Bose knives, Great Easterns or this custom I am pursuing. I will probably hold off on getting any customs or the Case annual until after the new year, I have a vacation to plan for.
