Ready for a new steel, and need help

Smitty,

There are many who strive for a knife that is easily sharpened yet holds a great edge. That is the goal. So if you have made a blade that sharpens easily and keeps and edge you hit the jackpot. I personally am not as worried about sharpening as if you keep it sharp it is not that big a deal. Now a few other questions.

Are you full hardening, edge quenching, drawing the back etc?
Have you tried a file test on the edge? I know this is not the best way to check an edge but it will give you an idea of what the hardness might be if you do not have an RC tester.
Are you doing any type of cutting tests? Using and abrasive material like manila or sisal rope is one way. See how many cuts you can make without putting say over 25lbs of pressure on he blade. yes you will need to do this on a scale. Then when you can't cut anymore try changing the edge geometry and do it again.
Also using the knife can give you a great deal of information. You have already been impressed with the use aspect, now really challenge the material.

Also, please do not think that I am against using other steels. I am all for it. I just don't want to see someone jump from steel to steel without obtaining the true performance available within that given steel.

Good luck and keep on cutting
